Although dating to pre-Islamic times, it has been the center of the Muslim world since the early seventh century.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This article, by Dr. Mohammad Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the leader of the Mecca-based Muslim World League, appeared on Sunday in the Deseret News<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst Presidency Welcomes Leader of Muslim World League:\u00a0His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Abdulkarim Al-Issa promotes \u2018a course toward peaceful coexistence\u2019\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe First Presidency gave Dr. Al-Issa a medallion and a copy of \u201cThe Niche of Lights,\u201d an ancient text by 11th century Islamic thinker Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali. The book is part of the Islamic Translation Series published by Brigham Young University Press.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

That, of course, is the Islamic Translation Series that I conceived, founded, and led until my ouster in 2012-2013. \u00a0The Niche of Lights<\/em> was the second book that we published.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, I attended Dr. Al-Issa\u2019s 11:00 AM public lecture in the Auditorium of the Harold B. Lee Library.\u00a0 The title of his speech, delivered in Arabic and then rendered passage by passage by a Saudi translator into English, was \u201cThe Essential Mission to Build Bonds Among the Nations.\u201d \u00a0Afterwards, I participated in a luncheon with Dr. Al-Issa and his entourage.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

His remarks about his visit to Utah and with Church leadership \u2014 I believe that he had a dinner last night that was chaired by Elder David A. Bednar of the Council of the Twelve \u2014 were very laudatory and positive, both during his formal speech and in private conversation (with me, anyway). \u00a0He was especially interested in two things, which he mentioned repeatedly:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

One was our \u201cpatience\u201d (his translator\u2019s rendition of his own Arabic sabr<\/em>, which he also used while we were chatting) and our \u201ctolerance\u201d (tasammuh<\/em>), given the history of persecution that drove us from the eastern United States westward to the Great Basin. \u00a0The other was our \u201cphilanthropy\u201d (a\u2018mal al-khayr<\/em> or \u201cacts of goodness\u201d or \u201cgood deeds\u201d). \u00a0He was obviously deeply impressed by both.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I was pleased, by the way, to be told that one of the things given to him by the Church in preparation for his visit to Utah was a copy of my article \u201cUnderstanding Islam,\u201d<\/a> which was published in the April 2018 isssue of the Ensign<\/em>.<\/p>\n
