Montgomery Watt \u2014\u00a0Scottish historian, orientalist, Anglican priest, premiere biographer of Muhammad, prolific Islamicist,\u00a0and Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh \u2014 on the founder of Islam:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>\u201cHis readiness to undergo persecutions for his beliefs, the high moral character of the men who believed in him and looked up to him as leader, and the greatness of his ultimate achievement \u2013 all argue his fundamental integrity. To suppose Muhammad an impostor raises more problems than it solves. Moreover, none of the great figures of history is so poorly appreciated in the West as Muhammad.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I admire the work of W. Montgomery Watt enormously, and recommend it highly. \u00a0In the meantime, among the many biographies of Muhammad that are available and on the market, there\u2019s this one, which may not be the absolute worst:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Muhammad-Prophet-God-Daniel-Peterson\/dp\/0802807542\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Muhammad+Peterson&amp;qid=1573769327&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Muhammad: Prophet of God<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Founding not only a world religion but also an empire and a civilization, the prophet Muhammad was undoubtedly one of the most influential men in history. Amid the swirl of current judgments regarding Muslims and their religion, this book by Daniel Peterson offers a concise, objective, accessible biography of the first Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Blending the texts of traditional sources into an engaging narrative, Peterson begins with the impoverished and orphaned childhood of Muhammad, highlighting his evident strength of will, character, and resourcefulness. Peterson then moves through the prophet\u2019s life, detailing Muhammad\u2019s visions and revelations and examining the beginning of a religion that continues to affect the entire world in dramatic ways. Respectful and readable,\u00a0<i>Muhammad, Prophet of God<\/i>\u00a0opens a clear window on the life and influence of the founder of Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t looked at the relevant Amazon.com page for several years before today, and I was shocked to see that there are now twenty four reviews, which are overwhelmingly . . . \u00a0well, <em>positive<\/em>. \u00a0As to the three negative reviews: \u00a0(1) \u00a0I don\u2019t know how to reply to someone who simply pronounces himself \u201cDisappointed,\u201d with no further explanation. \u00a0(2) \u00a0Surprisingly, to myself as well as to anybody else, I didn\u2019t choose the title (or the subtitle). \u00a0I first saw it when the book went on sale, earlier than I had anticipated. \u00a0(3) \u00a0The weird review from \u201cMTYKK\u201d is simply inexplicable. \u00a0He demands \u201cfreedom of speech\u201d and then calls for the suppression of my book, he grossly misrepresents the contents of my book, and he falsely claims that Khaleel Mohammed was tricked into writing the book\u2019s foreword. \u00a0(See Professor Mohammed\u2019s own reply to MTYKK, which is appended directly to MTYKK\u2019s critique.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I have it on reasonably reliable authority that the book isn\u2019t <em>terrible<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Here\u2019s a pretty succinct paragraph from W.
