Matthew J. Grow<\/span><\/a> and Matthew C. Godfrey<\/a>, \u201cThe Joseph Smith Papers and the Book of Abraham:\u00a0A Response to Recent Reviews\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong>\u00a0The Joseph\u00a0Smith Papers welcomes engagement with its work and gratefully acknowledges the important work of various scholars on the Book of Abraham. Recent reviews in the\u00a0<\/em>Interpreter\u00a0of\u00a0<\/em>Revelations and Translations, Volume 4, however, significantly misunderstand the purposes and conventions of the project. This response corrects some of those misconceptions, including the idea that the transcript is riddled with errors and the idea that personal agendas drive the analysis in the volume. The complex history of the Book of Abraham can be understood through multiple faithful perspectives, and the Joseph\u00a0Smith Papers Project affirms the value of robust, respectful, and professional dialogue about our shared history.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong>\u00a0After\u00a0<\/em>Interpreter\u00a0published my lengthy paper that discussed apparent bias and flaws in scholarship in the Joseph\u00a0Smith Papers volume on the Book of Abraham, two members of the JSP Project team have responded with a\u00a0defense of their volume. Their reply is welcome and points to some of the strengths in the methodology behind much of the volume. However, the specific evidence for bias and flawed scholarship seems to stand and merits further attention.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

John Gee<\/a>, \u201cTaking Stock\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong> In a response to my review of their\u00a0<\/em>Book of Abraham and Related Manuscripts\u00a0volume, the series editors of the Joseph\u00a0Smith Papers provided feedback and commentary on two important items. There are other, unaddressed issues this rejoinder examines.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking, I think, for the rest of the leadership of the Interpreter Foundation, I want to say that I am pleased that this important discussion has taken place in the pages of our journal, Interpreter<\/em>.<\/p>\n
