(Photograph by my wife.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We spent the bulk of the day today sailing to and from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1I7zMKptjRs\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Santa Catalina Island<\/a> and on the island itself. \u00a0I began coming to Catalina when I was a little boy \u2014 I honestly can\u2019t remember my first time over on the old \u201cGreat White Steamship\u201d (now long since retired) \u2014 but, prior to today, I hadn\u2019t been back for at least a couple of decades. \u00a0So it was fun to see familiar sights again.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80388\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/11\/3b181e8dab0d92d4fde34655bf39e72e_catalina-island-800-320-c.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-80388\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/11\/3b181e8dab0d92d4fde34655bf39e72e_catalina-island-800-320-c.jpg\" alt=\"Avalon's iconic Casino\" width=\"598\" height=\"239\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An image of Avalon, ultimate provenance unknown, found online. The town\u2019s iconic \u201ccasino\u201d (which was never used, and was never intended to be used, for gambling) was completed in 1929. Its movie theater was the first designed for \u201ctalking\u201d films, and such directors as Cecil B. DeMille, Louis B. Mayer, and Samuel Goldwyn would yacht over to the island for glittering premieres of their movies in the Casino. \u00a0Unfortunately, on 7 November 2019, slightly more than two weeks ago, it was announced that the movie theater is now permanently closed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We had rented a little cart in advance, so we and friends took the scenic drive around the end of the island where its principal (only?) town, Avalon, is located. \u00a0We interrupted our driving to visit the 38-acre Wrigley Memorial &amp; Botanic Garden, which emphasizes island plants that are uniquely endemic to the\u00a0Channel Islands, off the coast of California. \u00a0We were impressed by the variety of cactus species that we saw, some of which are quite unusual.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80385\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/11\/b40febcc30b86404f283554329180d11.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-80385\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/11\/b40febcc30b86404f283554329180d11.jpg\" alt=\"Catalina map\" width=\"597\" height=\"461\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A simple map of Santa Catalina Island \u00a0\u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of hours of putt-putting around in our little cart in the area above Avalon, and following a bit of lunch, we boarded a semi-submersible boat for some fish-observing. \u00a0We saw mostly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Girella_nigricans\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">opaleyes<\/a> (\u201copal-eyes\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garibaldi_(fish)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Garibaldi damselfish<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paralabrax_clathratus\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">kelp bass or calico bass<\/a>, and what I guess to have been several kinds of smelt.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Curiously, it seems that the Santa Catalina Island land-mass was never directly connected, geologically speaking, to mainland California. \u00a0It surprised me a bit to learn that. \u00a0The two distinct rock units of which it is composed \u2014 Catalina schist\u00a0dating to the Early\u00a0Cretaceous Period\u00a0(that is, to 95 to 109 million years ago), and much more recent\u00a0Miocene\u00a0volcanic\u00a0and intrusive\u00a0igneous rocks (dating to somewhere between 23 and 5 million years before the present) \u2014 originally occurred on the ocean floor and emerged from the ocean through tectonic activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Channel Islands as a group (including those in the Santa Barbara Channel, to the north of Santa Catalina and its two neighbors, San Clemente and San Nicolas) were all heavily influenced if not altogether formed by volcanic activity approximately 14 million years ago, and they moved to their present location and took their current form by reason of plate tectonics.
