I\u2019m told that the two spots that unexpectedly opened up a few weeks ago on the Cruise Lady tour that I\u2019ll be leading next June<\/a> to the Oberammergau Passion Play and to several beautiful and historic spots in Germany and Austria remain open<\/em>. \u00a0(See \u201cFour centuries of Christian devotion in a small Bavarian town.\u201d<\/a>) \u00a0I\u2019m looking forward to this tour very, very much \u2014 my mission as a young man was in the nearby Swiss Alps \u2014 and I invite you to consider joining us. \u00a0If you\u2019re at all interested, though, you had better sign up quickly. \u00a0Once the two open places are filled, that will be it. \u00a0(There is, I\u2019m informed, a slight<\/em> chance that the company might be able to finagle two additional spots, for a total of four, but that\u2019s far from assured.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

From 4 July to 13 July, my wife and I will be accompanying a Baltic cruise<\/a>\u00a0through the Cruise Lady company. \u00a0This will be fun. \u00a0It\u2019s a beautiful and fascinating area, and I was back briefly in Finland and Estonia just a couple of months ago. \u00a0We\u2019ll visit the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and the Vasa Museum in Stockholm \u2014 for the latter of which, as a descendent of Danish and Norwegian grandparents, I have a very special, umm, fondness \u2014 and the great city of St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). \u00a0We\u2019ll spend time in Helsinki and in the wonderful \u201cold city\u201d of Tallinn, Estonia. \u00a0And so on and so forth. \u00a0There are, I\u2019m told, several spaces still available on this cruise.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

My wife and I won\u2019t be going to Israel and Egypt and\/or Jordan this next summer. \u00a0We\u2019ve been there and done that every year for ten or twelve years running, always at the same time (end of April and\/or beginning of May), and sometimes more than once annually, and we just decided that we would like to take a break. \u00a0Barring unforeseen developments, though, we\u2019ll be back at it again come April\/May 2021. \u00a0How long we\u2019ll continue to do it thereafter, though, I simply don\u2019t know. \u00a0So, if any out there have thought of visiting the Holy Land and\/or other places in the Middle East with me<\/em>, you might not want to put it off forever.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I might mention, though, that our friend (and Interpreter Foundation executive vice president) Steve Densley and our Egyptian friend Hany Tawfeek will be accompanying an \u201cUltimate Egypt\u201d tour<\/a> from 26 December 2019 through 6 January 2020 that I highly recommend. \u00a0My wife and I love Egypt. \u00a0We lived there for the first four years of our marriage. \u00a0It\u2019s an inexhaustibly interesting place to visit, and December\/January is a good time to go because the temperatures are reasonable.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And, just to be clear: \u00a0I am not paid to accompany these tours. \u00a0My food and lodging and travel expenses are covered \u2014 I\u2019m not independently wealthy, and couldn\u2019t\/wouldn\u2019t do them, otherwise \u2014 but I don\u2019t make any profit from them. \u00a0Why, then, do I do them? \u00a0Perhaps because I\u2019m mad. \u00a0But what I tell<\/em> myself is that I love these places. \u00a0I love seeing them myself, as often as possible, and I really, really, really love to introduce people to them and to tell people about them. \u00a0I\u2019m a teacher, and these sites are the best classrooms I can imagine.<\/p>\n
