charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41678\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/800px-A_picture_of_the_University_of_Michigan_campus_in_Ann_Arbor_Michigan_USA.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41678\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/800px-A_picture_of_the_University_of_Michigan_campus_in_Ann_Arbor_Michigan_USA.jpg\" alt=\"UMich campus\" width=\"597\" height=\"448\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where William Hamblin received his doctorate<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain photograph)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I apparently should have given them a title, but I didn\u2019t. \u00a0So we ended up with this rather unwieldy thing:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2020\/1\/2\/21043278\/daniel-peterson-remembering-co-author-william-bill-hamblin-pursuit-of-sharing-about-worlds-religions\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cRemembering co-author Bill Hamblin\u2019s pursuit of sharing about the world\u2019s religions\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pleased, though, that the online version of the article includes a baker\u2019s dozen of the photographs that Bill furnished for prior columns. \u00a0They were often very valuable.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the respects in which my solo continuation of the Hamblin\/Peterson column will be relatively impoverished: \u00a0I\u2019m simply not a photographer. \u00a0Many years ago, I went down into the jungle of lowland Guatemala, in the\u00a0Pet\u00e9n\u00a0Basin, to accompany supplies that the Maxwell Institute had been asked to provide for a BYU-involved archaeological dig that was going on at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmf.org\/project\/piedras-negras\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Piedras Negras<\/a>. \u00a0Among other preparations for the trip, including seeming gallons of insect repellant that proved to be remarkably ineffective, my wife furnished me with a new camera and many rolls of film. \u00a0(It was, as I say, a very long time ago.) \u00a0She told me to be sure of taking many photos. \u00a0In the end, I came back with three \u2014 and, each time I took one, it was because I suddenly remembered my wife\u2019s exhortation and thought to myself about how displeased she would be with me if I were to return without any pictures.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bill should have been on that trip. \u00a0He would have done it justice. \u00a0And not only in terms of photography.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I miss him. \u00a0I expect that I always will.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I share with you a very short but quite touching Iranian film \u2014 roughly 2.5 minutes in length and entitled <em>Qarar-e Panjshanbe<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Thursday Appointment<\/em>) \u2014 that evidently won a recent award at an international film festival in Luxor, Egypt. \u00a0It is the work of a twenty-year-old Iranian filmmaker by the name of Syed Mohammad Reza Kheradmand:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beautiful Iranian short film 2 MILLION views Award winning winner film festival Thursday Appointment\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XXx_Hw34V-Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who may not understand Persian (aka Farsi) \u2014 there are likely one or two of you out there, and my own Persian is long rusty with little use \u2014 \u00a0the older couple are playing a Persian poetry game. \u00a0In it, each person has to recite a poem or a line of a poem that starts with the last letter of the previous person\u2019s quotation. \u00a0(The YouTube version is evidently missing an important couple of seconds at the beginning in which the woman asks her husband, \u201cGive me one that starts with the letter \u2018<em>a<\/em>\u2019.\u201d \u00a0He obliges.) \u00a0The piece recited in the film is a fourteenth-century love poem by the great Persian writer Hafez. \u00a0It can be applied not just to romantic love for an individual but to the love of humanity more generally. \u00a0And it can also be interpreted to suggest the importance of being kind to the living before we or they depart this life.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the poem is translated quite literally and not very well, so it likely won\u2019t help you much. \u00a0But there are one or two translated comments in the subtitles that will help to orient you, though they aren\u2019t absolutely necessary for understanding the film\u2019s basic point.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One quite minor and pedantic remark: \u00a0Note how slowly and distinctly the couple recite Hafez\u2019s poem. \u00a0In my (very limited) experience with it, the Persian rhetorical\/oratorical style is a language-learner\u2019s dream: \u00a0Very clear and very deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And one other note: \u00a0Excellent films have been coming out of Iran for years now.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 I apparently should have given them a title, but I didn\u2019t. \u00a0So we ended up with this rather unwieldy thing: \u00a0 \u201cRemembering co-author Bill Hamblin\u2019s pursuit of sharing about the world\u2019s religions\u201d \u00a0 I\u2019m pleased, though, that the online version of the article includes a baker\u2019s dozen of the photographs that Bill furnished [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[6961,1932,5694,1107,7485,873,7488,3760,864,4895,3058,996,6864,2160,1110,761,7482,7479,6963],"class_list":["post-81576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-bill","tag-bill-hamblin","tag-cinema","tag-farsi","tag-festival","tag-film","tag-hafez","tag-hamblin","tag-iran","tag-iranian","tag-luxor","tag-middle-east","tag-middle-eastern","tag-movie","tag-persia","tag-persian","tag-syed-mohammad-reza-kheradmand","tag-thursday-appointment","tag-william"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>&quot;Thursday Appointment&quot;<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
