Along with Mount Palomar to the south, it was also one of the principal places where Allen Sandage did much of his work. Mount Wilson was perhaps the principal and most familiar feature of my natural environment. I saw it nearly every day of my childhood and youth.<br>(NASA public domain photograph)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in San Gabriel, California, I saw Mount Wilson \u2014 a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains \u2014 virtually every day of my life until I went away for college. \u00a0It was the dominant feature of the local horizon, as well as my reliable indicator of north. \u00a0Its most obvious and striking features were the television and radio antennas, but it was also easy (when we were in the right location and when the smog wasn\u2019t too bad!) to see at least some of its astronomical observatories.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44901\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44901\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/11\/Einstein_letter-5.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-44901\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/11\/Einstein_letter-5.jpg\" alt=\"Einstein, Hubble, and others atop Mount Wilson\" width=\"597\" height=\"743\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to right: Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble, Walther Mayer, Walter S.
