charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82746\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/02\/84879338_10222062977390009_2965982093949009920_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-82746\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/02\/84879338_10222062977390009_2965982093949009920_n.jpg\" alt='Truth from \"David Cassidy\"' width=\"597\" height=\"338\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I don\u2019t know the provenance of this meme, but I hope that its creator won\u2019t mind my borrowing it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I continue with thoughts that are more or less in the vein of my immediately previous post (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2020\/02\/an-apostle-makes-a-political-move.html\" rel=\"bookmark\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAn apostle makes a political move\u201d<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I make a pretty serious effort \u2014 largely successful, though not invariably so \u2014 to avoid politics on my blog during the Sabbath. \u00a0I believe that Sundays (or whatever the Sabbath might be where one happens to live) should be reserved for more important things, for a more significant and fundamental loyalty, than partisan earthly politics:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ba0404;\"><strong>\u201cThou shalt have no other gods before me. . . . \u00a0Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.\u201d \u00a0(Exodus 20:3, 5)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I especially hope to avoid politics on the Sabbath nowadays because of the venomous tribal hatred that increasingly accompanies political disagreements, even, to my deep sorrow, among Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I worry for our society and our nation. \u00a0I remember, for example, 3 Nephi 7:2, 5 from the Book of Mormon, a book that modern prophets and the book itself have repeatedly told us was given for our day:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"p2\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128349937\"><span style=\"color: #ba0404;\"><strong>And the people were divided one against another; and they did separate one from another into tribes, every man according to his family and his kindred and friends; and thus they did destroy the government of the land. . . . \u00a0[A]nd all this iniquity had come upon the people because\u00a0they did yield themselves unto the power of Satan.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I fear that we ourselves may be headed in the same direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Very shortly after that collapse of Nephite society into warring factions, the Nephites are nearly destroyed by an enormous physical cataclysm, in the wake of which the resurrected Savior appears among them following the close of his Palestinian ministry. \u00a0And here is one of the things he teaches them during that brief sojourn in the New World:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"p29\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128347982\"><span style=\"color: #ba0404;\"><strong>For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of<span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p30\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128347983\"><span style=\"color: #ba0404;\"><strong>Behold, this is not my doctrine, to stir up the hearts of men with anger, one against another;
