{"id":82982,"date":"2020-02-18T19:03:22","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T02:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=82982"},"modified":"2020-02-18T20:59:54","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T03:59:54","slug":"art-and-architecture-and-really-good-fast-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2020\/02\/art-and-architecture-and-really-good-fast-food.html","title":{"rendered":"Art and Architecture and Really Good Fast Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50075\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/04\/Taliesin_West_Frank_Lloyd_Wright_Boulevard_Scottsdale_Arizona_LCCN2011631335.tif_.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-50075\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/04\/Taliesin_West_Frank_Lloyd_Wright_Boulevard_Scottsdale_Arizona_LCCN2011631335.tif_.jpg\" alt=\"Taliesin West, by night\" width=\"597\" height=\"469\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s Taliesin West \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0(Library of Congress image, public domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With my wife and a couple of Utah friends, I made yet another pilgrimage yesterday to Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s winter home and desert laboratory and architectural school at Taliesin West, in Scottsdale.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then we met up with old friends who now live in Gilbert, and they suggested that we visit the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery in Chandler.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82988\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/02\/12141705_478111645723282_6863407833491767685_n-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-82988\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/02\/12141705_478111645723282_6863407833491767685_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"Basha collection\" width=\"595\" height=\"220\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This will give you some SLIGHT sense of the scale of part of the collection, which you would never guess from the exterior of the building in which it is housed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We had never heard of it, but I need to give a strong, strong recommendation for it here. \u00a0First, though, a bit of background:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Najeeb Basha immigrated to the United States from\u00a0Lebanon\u00a0in 1886 and then moved with his wife to Arizona in 1910. \u00a0The first\u00a0Bashas\u2019 grocery store bearing that name was founded by Najeeb\u2019s sons,\u00a0Ike Basha\u00a0and\u00a0Eddie Basha, Sr., in Chandler. \u00a0There are now more than 130 Bashas\u2019 stores, all but one of them in Arizona \u2014 every county in the state \u2014 and one in New Mexico.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Upon the death of Eddie Sr., Eddie Basha, Jr. took over the company\u2019s leadership. \u00a0Although himself Roman Catholic \u2014 presumably, the family were originally Maronites back in Lebanon \u2014 he was a friend of the Latter-day Saints and at least one of his sons joined the Church. \u00a0(If I have things right, which is far from certain, he\u2019s currently serving as a stake president.) Eddie Jr. died in March 2013,<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and the CEO of Bashas\u2019 is now Eddie Jr.\u2019s son, Eddie Basha III (who may [or may not] be the stake president).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Jr. graduated with a degree in history from Stanford University before returning to the family grocery business, but somewhere along the way he became a dedicated and very discerning collector of western American and Southwest Indian art.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And now you can visit his collection, at absolutely no charge. \u00a0(Because of our friends\u2019 personal connection to the family, they held the gallery open for us past its normal closing time. \u00a0But there is never an admission charge.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Eddie Basha Collection of western American and American Indian art is on display in the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery, which is located at<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bashas\u2019 Corporate Office<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">22402 S.
