With my wife and a couple of Utah friends, I made yet another pilgrimage yesterday to Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s winter home and desert laboratory and architectural school at Taliesin West, in Scottsdale.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then we met up with old friends who now live in Gilbert, and they suggested that we visit the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery in Chandler.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This will give you some SLIGHT sense of the scale of part of the collection, which you would never guess from the exterior of the building in which it is housed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We had never heard of it, but I need to give a strong, strong recommendation for it here. \u00a0First, though, a bit of background:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Najeeb Basha immigrated to the United States from\u00a0Lebanon\u00a0in 1886 and then moved with his wife to Arizona in 1910. \u00a0The first\u00a0Bashas\u2019 grocery store bearing that name was founded by Najeeb\u2019s sons,\u00a0Ike Basha\u00a0and\u00a0Eddie Basha, Sr., in Chandler. \u00a0There are now more than 130 Bashas\u2019 stores, all but one of them in Arizona \u2014 every county in the state \u2014 and one in New Mexico.<\/sup><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Upon the death of Eddie Sr., Eddie Basha, Jr. took over the company\u2019s leadership. \u00a0Although himself Roman Catholic \u2014 presumably, the family were originally Maronites back in Lebanon \u2014 he was a friend of the Latter-day Saints and at least one of his sons joined the Church. \u00a0(If I have things right, which is far from certain, he\u2019s currently serving as a stake president.) Eddie Jr. died in March 2013,<\/sup>\u00a0and the CEO of Bashas\u2019 is now Eddie Jr.\u2019s son, Eddie Basha III (who may [or may not] be the stake president).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Eddie Jr. graduated with a degree in history from Stanford University before returning to the family grocery business, but somewhere along the way he became a dedicated and very discerning collector of western American and Southwest Indian art.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And now you can visit his collection, at absolutely no charge. \u00a0(Because of our friends\u2019 personal connection to the family, they held the gallery open for us past its normal closing time. \u00a0But there is never an admission charge.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Eddie Basha Collection of western American and American Indian art is on display in the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery, which is located at<\/p>\n

It\u2019s closed on weekends, but is typically open on weekdays between 9 AM and 4 PM. \u00a0You can call them at 480-895-5230.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you go, don\u2019t expect an outwardly spectacular art museum. \u00a0It looks nothing like that. \u00a0It\u2019s not even a nice corporate office. \u00a0And it\u2019s in what looks at first like an ordinary residential neighborhood, shading perhaps an industrial area. \u00a0But inside an unpreposessing building is an absolute treasure. \u00a0I\u2019m not, myself, a particular fan of western art, though I like it well enough. \u00a0I certainly enjoyed the Basha collection, though \u2014 more than 3000 items, including Hopi katsinas<\/em>, cowboy paintings, sculpture, pottery, baskets \u2014 and fully intend to go back sometime and, if possible, more than once. \u00a0If you\u2019re in the Phoenix area, you really should go. \u00a0Really. \u00a0It was stunning.<\/p>\n

After the Basha museum, we drove a few minutes to Gilbert where we and our friends had dinner with still other friends at Joe\u2019s Farm Grill<\/a>, which has some of the best \u201cfast food\u201d I\u2019ve ever had. \u00a0We shared a lot. \u00a0All of the things that I tasted \u2014 including greater or lesser portions of a date shake, a dark chocolate shake, jumbo fried shrimp, onion rings, a gouda garlic bacon burger, sweet potato fries, and fried green beans \u2014 were very, very goo.<\/p>\n
