(Image from the website of Koninklijke Brill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago now, with Gerrit Bos, who is now Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at the University of Cologne, in Germany, I launched the publication of a series of \u201cThe Medical Works of Moses Maimonides\u201d as part of what was then called the Middle Eastern Texts Initiative (METI), based at Brigham Young University and under the auspices of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship..<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In subsequent years, I was drop-kicked out the door of the Maxwell Institute and METI was eventually handed over to E. J. Brill, in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pleased, though, that the series that I conceived continues to bear rich fruit. \u00a0And, happily, under the terms that my then-dean negotiated on my behalf, two copies of each new volume are sent to me in perpetuity by the Maxwell Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, for example, I received in the mail two copies each of two new volumes in the Maimonides series:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/title\/56021\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-extra-large\">Gerrit Bos, <em>Maimonides, Commentary on Hippocrates\u2019\u00a0<\/em>Aphorisms:<em>\u00a0A New Parallel Arabic-English Edition and Translation, with Critical Editions of the Medieval Hebrew Translations<\/em>,\u00a0Volume 1 (Leiden and Boston: Koninklijke Brill, 2020), x + 607 pp.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/title\/57082\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-extra-large\">Gerrit Bos, <em>Maimonides, Commentary on Hippocrates\u2019\u00a0<\/em>Aphorisms:<em>\u00a0A New Parallel Arabic-English Edition and Translation, with Critical Editions of the Medieval Hebrew Translations<\/em>,\u00a0Volume 2 (Leiden and Boston: Koninklijke Brill, 2020), viii + 307 pp.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a helpful paragraph taken from the description on the Brill website:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #020259;\">Hippocrates\u2019\u00a0<i>Aphorisms<\/i>\u00a0enjoyed great popularity in the ancient and medieval world and, according to Maimonides, it was Hippocrates\u2019 most useful work as it contained aphorisms, which every physician should know by heart. They were translated into Hebrew several times, but it was Maimonides\u2019\u00a0<i>Commentary on Hippocrates\u2019 Aphorisms<\/i>\u00a0that made the work influential in Jewish circles. For the composition of his commentary, Maimonides consulted the\u00a0<i>Aphorisms<\/i>\u00a0through the commentary by Galen, translated by \u1e24unayn ibn Is\u1e25\u0101q.
