{"id":84257,"date":"2020-04-10T19:35:34","date_gmt":"2020-04-11T01:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=84257"},"modified":"2020-04-12T14:29:09","modified_gmt":"2020-04-12T20:29:09","slug":"three-who-yearned-for-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2020\/04\/three-who-yearned-for-easter.html","title":{"rendered":"Three who yearned for Easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39591\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39591\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/02\/800px-Soleil_couchant_sur_le_Vercors.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-39591\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/02\/800px-Soleil_couchant_sur_le_Vercors.jpg\" alt=\"Photo taken near Grenoble\" width=\"596\" height=\"436\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cSoleil couchant sur le Vercors\u201d \u00a0\u00a0(Wikimedia Commons \u00a9 Guillaume Piolle \/ CC BY 3.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Easter 2017, I published this column in the <em>Deseret News<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">A decade ago, in February 2007, came the dramatic announcement that Jesus\u2019s ossuary or \u201cbone box\u201d (and perhaps even his bones) had been found in Jerusalem\u2019s southern neighborhood of East Talpiot.\u00a0 Scholars overwhelmingly rejected the claim, and it\u2019s largely forgotten today.\u00a0 Briefly, though, it enjoyed a flurry of media attention\u2014including an interview with Larry King, then a major television celebrity.\u00a0 \u201cIs this the end of the Easter Bunny?\u201d King asked one of the discovery\u2019s boosters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">That, of course, was a frivolous question.\u00a0 Decisive disproof of the resurrection would destroy not merely the Easter Bunny but the religious tradition at the root of Western culture.\u00a0 More importantly still, it would strip Christians of their most cherished hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cIf Christ has not been raised,\u201d wrote the apostle Paul at 1 Corinthians 15:14-19, \u201cour preaching is useless and so is your faith.\u00a0 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. . . .\u00a0 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied\u201d (New International Version).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Easter matters.\u00a0 Enormously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">I share striking illustrations of the importance of its message from three very different men:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Thomas Jefferson was heartbroken when his 33-year-old wife, Martha, died in 1782. \u00a0Nearly 45 years later, after his own death, attendants found a gold locket on a chain around his neck.\u00a0 It contained a faded blue ribbon that bound a lock of Martha\u2019s brown hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">On November 13, 1818, upon learning that Abigail Adams, John Adams\u2019s remarkable wife, had died, Jefferson wrote to Adams, whom he addressed as \u201cmy dear friend\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cTried myself in the school of affliction, by the loss of every form of connection which can rive the human heart, I know well, and feel what you have lost, what you have suffered, are suffering, and have yet to endure. The same trials have taught me that for ills so immeasurable, time and silence are the only medicine. I will not, therefore, by useless condolences, open afresh the sluices of your grief, nor, although mingling sincerely my tears with yours, will I say a word more where words are vain, but that it is of some comfort to us both, that the term is not very distant, at which we are to deposit in the same cerement [burial clothing], our sorrows and suffering bodies, and to ascend in essence to an ecstatic meeting with the friends we have loved and lost, and whom we shall still love and never lose again. God bless you and support you under your heavy affliction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Both Jefferson and Adams would die on July 4, 1826, precisely fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Benjamin Franklin, his contemporaries said, could \u201crestrain thunderbolts and tyrants.\u201d\u00a0 On April 17, 1790, though, he could not restrain death. \u00a0And, his biographer Carl Van Doren wrote, \u201cNo other town burying its great man, ever buried more of itself than Philadelphia with Franklin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">As a clever young wit in 1728, Franklin had composed a mock epitaph for himself:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">The Body of<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Franklin, Printer;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Like the Cover of an old Book,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Its Contents torn out,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">And stript of its Lettering and Gilding,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Lies here, Food for Worms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">But the Work shall not be wholly lost:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">For it will, as he believ\u2019d, appear once more,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">In a new &amp; more perfect Edition,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Corrected and amended<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">By the Author.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">In 1957, late in his own life, the great scholar and apologist C. S.
