charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32962\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/04\/salt-lake-temple-775360-gallery.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-32962\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/04\/salt-lake-temple-775360-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Where the Boss and I were married\" width=\"596\" height=\"396\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1978 Revelation on Priesthood was received in the Salt Lake Temple. \u00a0\u00a0(LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned in a previous post (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2020\/05\/acts-2-with-an-axe-to-grind.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cActs 2, with an axe to grind\u201d<\/a>), the events recounted in the second chapter of Acts take place less than two months after Easter. \u00a0That\u2019s important to keep in mind. \u00a0If Peter\u2019s speech, given on the occasion, is at all accurately reported, its content is striking. \u00a0Take 2:22-24, for example:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><span id=\"en-ESV-26960\" class=\"text Acts-2-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cMen of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs [\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03ac\u03bc\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2 ]that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know\u2014<\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-26961\" class=\"text Acts-2-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>this Jesus,\u00a0delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-26962\" class=\"text Acts-2-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2:22 \u2014 Peter calls attention to the \u201cmighty works and wonders and signs\u201d \u2014 that is, to the miracles \u2014 performed by Jesus as both known to and undoubted (though perhaps variously interpreted) by his audience. \u00a0(See also, on this matter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2020\/04\/a-simple-argument-for-the-historicity-of-jesus-as-a-miracle-worker.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">A simple argument for the historicity of Jesus as a miracle-worker.\u201d) \u00a0<\/span>He seems to have really done miracles, or at least to have <em>seemed<\/em> to have done them. \u00a0And this is less than two months after Jesus\u2019 death, with an audience right there in Jerusalem where the gospels report that many of Christ\u2019s miracles were performed.<\/li>\n<li>2:24 \u2014 The claim that Jesus had been resurrected is being made, again, within less than two months of the purported event, to people who could easily have demonstrated that the tomb was still occupied, if in fact it was.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And consider also 2:31, which refers to David the Psalmist:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"top-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><span class=\"text Acts-2-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades <\/span><span class=\"text Acts-2-31\">[\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2\u00a0<\/span>\u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03bd]<span id=\"en-ESV-26969\" class=\"text Acts-2-31\">, nor did his flesh see corruption.<\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-26970\" class=\"text Acts-2-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses [\u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2].<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><span id=\"en-ESV-26971\" class=\"text Acts-2-33\"><\/span><span id=\"en-ESV-26973\" class=\"text Acts-2-35\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2:31-32 \u2014 Again, he testifies of the raising of Jesus, indicating that Jesus was not left to linger in the world of spirits (\u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03bd) but reunited with his (resurrected) body shortly after his death.<\/li>\n<li>2:32 \u2014 The apostles are already, just ten days after the Ascension, coming out publicly as \u201cwitnesses\u201d (\u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2; <em>martyres<\/em>) of Christ\u2019s resurrection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And note 2:36, which draws the appropriate conclusion:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"first-line-none top-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><span id=\"en-ESV-26974\" class=\"text Acts-2-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Peter has already said at 2:22 that Jesus was \u201cattested . . . by God\u201d through the miracles wrought at his hand. \u00a0But the greatest of all miracles, the resurrection, <em>confirms<\/em> him to be \u201cboth Lord and Christ.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two Miscellaneous Notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Elder Bruce R. McConkie alluded to the \u201cdivided tongues as of fire [that] appeared to them and rested\u00a0on each one of them\u201d at Acts 2:3 as a way of <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fromthedesk.org\/elder-bruce-r-mcconkie-recounts-1978-priesthood-revelation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">explaining his experience<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> with the other apostles during the June 1978 revelation on priesthood that was received in the Salt Lake Temple.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Some Christians insist that Christianity marks a complete rejection of the temple-centric character of ancient Judaism. \u00a0But Acts 2:46, which describes the apostles after the resurrection as \u201c<span id=\"en-ESV-26984\" class=\"text Acts-2-46\">attending the temple together,\u201d apparently daily, provides no support for that view.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"footnotes\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 As I mentioned in a previous post (\u201cActs 2, with an axe to grind\u201d), the events recounted in the second chapter of Acts take place less than two months after Easter. \u00a0That\u2019s important to keep in mind. \u00a0If Peter\u2019s speech, given on the occasion, is at all accurately reported, its content is striking.
