In wasn\u2019t until 1983, however, that archaeologists first uncovered a domesticated form of barley native to the Americas in Arizona in a pre-Columbian (ca. AD 900) context.<a id=\"footnoteref1_xdtiun6\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"See John L. Sorenson and Robert F. Smith, \u201cBarley in Ancient America,\u201d in Reexploring the Book of Mormon: A Decade of New Research, ed. John W. Maxwell for Religious Scholarship, 2013), 303.\" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote1_xdtiun6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">1<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cLittle barley,\u201d as scientists call it, has since been found throughout the Mississippi River valley,<a id=\"footnoteref2_sw9kjel\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"For a listing of several places it has been in the mid-west and eastern United States, see Tyler Livingston, \u201cBarley and the Book of Mormon: New Evidence,\u201d Book of Mormon Archaeological Forum (2010).\" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote2_sw9kjel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2<\/a> where it was a major staple during the Middle (ca. 200 BC\u2013AD 500) and Late Woodland (ca. AD 500\u20131000) periods,<a id=\"footnoteref3_b4242w7\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Michael T. Dunn and William Green, \u201cTerminal Archaic and Early Woodland Plant Use at the Gast Spring Site (13LA152) Southeast Iowa,\u201d Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology 23, no. 1 (1998): 47 mention little barley as one of two \u201cstartchy-seed\u201d crops that \u201cdominate archaeobotanical assemblages in the area\u201d of western Illinois and eastern Iowa during the Middle and Late Woodland periods. Some of the data supporting this is discussed on pp. 63\u201364.\" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote3_b4242w7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">3<\/a> though \u201clikely cultivated specimens\u201d have also been found dating to as early as 800 BC in Iowa.<a id=\"footnoteref4_0epknuu\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Dunn and Green, \u201cTerminal Archaic and Early Woodland Plant Use,\u201d 64, state that grains of little barley found at Gast Springs were dated to 2800 +\/\u2013 45 BP. BP stands for \u201cbefore present,\u201d hence 2800 BP is approximately 800 BC. \" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote4_0epknuu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">4<\/a> According to two non-LDS scholars, \u201cextensive archaeological evidence also points to the cultivation of little barley in the Southwest and parts of Mexico.\u201d<a id=\"footnoteref5_hs45xmd\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Dunn and Green, \u201cTerminal Archaic and Early Woodland Plant Use,\u201d 64.\" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote5_hs45xmd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">5<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Over time, more and more evidence for domestication of little barley in the Americas has emerged over an increasingly wider span of both time and geography. Little barley may have diffused to other regions of the Americas which were known to trade with the southwest and eastern United States, including the exchange of crops.<a id=\"footnoteref6_h202m8b\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"See Livingston, \u201cBarley and the Book of Mormon\u201d; also see John L. Sorenson, \u201cMesoamericans in Pre-Columbian North America,\u201d in Reexploring the Book of Mormon, 218\u2013219.\" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote6_h202m8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">6<\/a> In any case, evidence demonstrates that in at least some parts of the Americas, a type of barley was a highly important crop during Book of Mormon times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">This has important implications for the Book of Mormon. In the second and first centuries BC, barley played a significant role in Nephite society, not only as food, but as a measurement of exchange (<a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/11.1-19?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Alma 11:1\u201319<\/a>), just as it did in ancient Near Eastern economic systems.<a id=\"footnoteref7_xcmy6eq\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"See John W. Welch, \u201cWeighing and Measuring in the Worlds of the Book of Mormon,\u201d Journal of Book of Mormon Studies 8, no. 2 (1999): 40\u201341. \" href=\"https:\/\/knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org\/knowhy\/how-can-barley-in-the-book-of-mormon-feed-faith#footnote7_xcmy6eq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">7<\/a> Evidence from what is often called archaeobotany (the study of plants remains at archaeological sites) now confirms that a species of barley was highly important to some cultures in the Americas at this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">This is another example that illustrates the benefits that come with patience in archaeology.<a id=\"footnoteref8_x1nw548\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"For additional examples, see Book of Mormon Central, \u201cWhy Are Horses Mentioned in the Book of Mormon? Sorenson commented, \u201cThat such an important crop could have gone undetected for so long by archaeologists justifies the thought that wheat might also be found in ancient [American] sites.\u201d<a id=\"footnoteref9_iosp9lk\" class=\"see-footnote decorated-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"John L.
