John Zogby<\/a>,\u00a0is a prominent American public opinion expert, the founder of the Zogby International poll.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I share, here, some additional extracts from James Zogby,\u00a0Arab Voices: What They Are Saying to Us, and Why It Matters<\/em> (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2010). \u00a0In the first of these passages, he is drawing on Zogby International, The Ten-Nation Impressions of America Poll<\/em>, conducted between 4 March 2002 and 3 April 2002:<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Contrary to the negative claims of pundits like [the late Charles] Krauthammer, we found that Arabs actually liked<\/em> many things about America. \u00a0But it wasn\u2019t American values or people that had caused the image of the United States to crater. \u00a0America\u2019s overall ranking sank because of the incredibly low marks Arabs gave to U.S. policy toward Arab nations generally and Palestinians specifically.<\/span><\/p>\nNearly nine out of ten respondents in every Arab nation gave a negative rating to the U.S. handling of the Palestinian conflict \u2014 an issue viewed uniformly as \u201cthe most important\u201d or \u201ca very important\u201d concern facing the Arab World today. \u00a0In other words, if we need to have a headline claiming that Arabs hate something, then it would be more accurate to say, \u201cArabs Hate U.S. Policy Toward Their Region\u201d \u2014 although that probably won\u2019t sell as many newspapers. \u00a0(84)<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
On another occasion, a Lebanese friend of mine described the general Arab mood as \u201cnot a rejection of America, but a feeling of being rejected by America \u2014 not hatred of America, but feeling hated by America. \u00a0There is a longing to be accepted and respected by America and the clear sense we are not. \u00a0You can say we feel like jilted lovers.\u201d \u00a0(90)<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
In short, with increased exposure, negativity tends to dissipate. \u00a0This leads to an obvious conclusion: instead of continuing to feed the myth that Arabs hate us, we ought to be cultivating the affection of those most inclined to see the West in a positive light \u2014 the young, the educated, and the well traveled. \u00a0These are the people who will be the Arab World\u2019s next generation of leaders. \u00a0That\u2019s the future. \u00a0That\u2019s also the challenge. \u00a0And the sooner we in the West rise to it, the better all of us will be. \u00a0(92)<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
