{"id":86128,"date":"2020-06-24T17:11:29","date_gmt":"2020-06-24T23:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=86128"},"modified":"2020-06-27T00:38:05","modified_gmt":"2020-06-27T06:38:05","slug":"will-anybody-be-saved-on-his-or-her-own-merits-without-the-atonement-of-christ","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2020\/06\/will-anybody-be-saved-on-his-or-her-own-merits-without-the-atonement-of-christ.html","title":{"rendered":"Will ANYBODY be saved on his or her own merits, without the Atonement of Christ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33659\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/05\/accra-ghana-temple-lds-249026-gallery.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-33659\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/05\/accra-ghana-temple-lds-249026-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"The temple in Accra Ghana\" width=\"596\" height=\"397\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Accra Ghana Temple (LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quite a few years ago \u2014 I wish that I could find the actual discussion, but I no longer remember where or exactly when it was \u2014 I entered into an online conversation on a Jewish message board about the Latter-day Saint practice of vicarious baptism for the dead. \u00a0(A controversy had recently flared about such baptisms having apparently been performed on behalf of Jewish victims of Hitler\u2019s Holocaust.) \u00a0One person, who has been monitoring whatever I do and say over the past fifteen or so, keeps extensive dossiers on me for decontextualized and distorted weaponizing against me whenever he feels the need (i.e., pretty much daily), and he is using those dossiers now to demonstrate my contempt for non-LDS faiths and, specifically, my anti-Semitic disdain for Jews. \u00a0One of the props that he uses to make his point is a comment that I still remember making in the course of that online conversation. \u00a0A Jewish interlocutor had accused Latter-day Saints of believing that Jews cannot be saved \u201con their own.\u201d \u00a0 I replied that he was correct. \u00a0And this, it is said, illustrates my hatred for Jews and Judaism.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, I reproduce here a blog entry that I posted during yet another flare-up of controversy about vicarious Latter-day Saint baptisms back in December of 2017. \u00a0Please note that it cites fairly extensively from Jesus and Peter and Paul, who were plainly Jewish, and from New World prophets whom Latter-day Saints believe to have been of Hebrew stock:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Every once in a while, Helen Radkey \u2014 an ex-Mormon who left the Church decades ago and plainly can\u2019t leave it alone \u2014 tries to\u00a0embroil\u00a0the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> in a scandal regarding its belief in the efficacy of vicarious temple work on behalf of the dead. \u00a0Here\u2019s a brief account of her latest effort, including a comment by my friend and Interpreter Foundation colleague <a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/foundation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dr. Noel B. Reynolds<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/900006133\/mormon-baptisms-on-holocaust-victims-celebrities-violated-church-policy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cRecent Mormon baptisms for Holocaust victims questioned\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I would like, though, to comment on a remark made by Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in an article on the subject carried by the <em>Salt Lake Tribune<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/religion\/local\/2017\/12\/21\/researcher-mormons-are-performing-baptisms-on-holocaust-victims-donald-trump-joe-biden-and-more\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cResearcher: Mormons are performing baptisms for Holocaust victims and grandparents of Trump, Clinton and Spielberg\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Here\u2019s the relevant passage:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"row paragraph-row\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph text-align-override-left\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The Simon Wiesenthal Center previously asked that Wiesenthal, who died in 2005, be removed from the database, said Rabbi Marvin Hier, its founder and dean. Hier said he plans to send a letter to Mormon officials asking that his name be removed again.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row paragraph-row\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph text-align-override-left\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cThey may mean well, but it\u2019s insulting to Jews, and it would be insulting to Mr. Wiesenthal,\u201d Hier said. \u201cHe lived a life of good deeds, and he doesn\u2019t need any assistance in getting to heaven.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Well. \u00a0I have absolutely no desire to insult either Jews or Simon Wiesenthal, whom I\u2019ve long regarded as something of a hero for his efforts in tracking down Nazi war criminals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But I must point out that no mainstream Christian and certainly no Latter-day Saint can agree with the statement\u00a0\u201cHe lived a life of good deeds, and he doesn\u2019t need any assistance in getting to heaven.\u201d \u00a0Unless, of course, the \u201cHe\u201d involved is Jesus Christ himself. \u00a0It\u2019s the virtually unanimous teaching of Christendom over the past two thousand years that nobody \u2014 <em>nobody<\/em> \u2014 will gain heaven on the unassisted strength of his or her own righteousness. \u00a0The atoning sacrifice of Jesus is required by\u00a0<em>everybody<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cFor all have\u00a0sinned, and come short of the glory of God.\u201d \u00a0(Romans 3:23)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cJesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.\u201d \u00a0(John 14:6)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cNeither is there\u00a0salvation\u00a0in any other: for there is none other\u00a0name\u00a0under heaven given among men, whereby we must be\u00a0saved.\u201d \u00a0(Acts 4:12)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cWherefore,\u00a0redemption\u00a0cometh in and through the\u00a0Holy Messiah; for he is full of\u00a0grace\u00a0and truth.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p7\" class=\"verse highlight\" data-aid=\"128346400\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span class=\"verse-number verse\">\u201c<\/span>Behold, he offereth himself a\u00a0sacrifice\u00a0for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto\u00a0none\u00a0else can the\u00a0ends\u00a0of the law be answered.\u201d \u00a0(2 Nephi 2:6-7)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"verse highlight\" data-aid=\"128346400\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cFor we labor diligently to write, to\u00a0persuade\u00a0our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we\u00a0know that it is by\u00a0grace\u00a0that we are saved, after all we can\u00a0do.\u201d \u00a0(2 Nephi 25:23)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse highlight\" data-aid=\"128346400\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cAnd this is the means whereby salvation cometh. And there is\u00a0none\u00a0other salvation save this which hath been spoken of; neither are there any conditions whereby man can be saved except the conditions which I have told you.\u201d \u00a0(Mosiah 4:8)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This is very basic Christian doctrine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Now, I fully understand that Jews (and others) disagree with this doctrine. \u00a0That\u2019s fine. \u00a0That\u2019s what religious pluralism is all about. \u00a0 \u00a0But here\u2019s something else that\u2019s entailed by a commitment to religious pluralism: \u00a0We must grant others the right to believe things that we don\u2019t believe and, unless doing so violates the rights of those around them, the right to act on those beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37364\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/10\/800px-KZ_Mauthausen.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37364\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-37364\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/10\/800px-KZ_Mauthausen.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance into Mauthausen\" width=\"597\" height=\"420\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The liberation of KZ-Mauthausen, Austria, on 6 May 1945<\/span><br><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019m guessing, from what he told me, that my father, a sergeant in the Eleventh Armored Division of General George Patton\u2019s Third Army, passed through this very same gate within a few minutes (at most) of this public domain photograph. What he saw there powerfully affected him for the rest of his life, and he told me about it on many occasions, imploring me never to forget what he said. I never have. I regard remembering it as a sacred duty both to my father and to the victims at Mauthausen, to which I\u2019ve made a number visits that, for me, have the character of pilgrimage.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I think that I also have some sense of the sensitivities and sensibilities of Jews on the matter of preserving their identity and resisting forced conversion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">No non-Jew, I\u2019m sure, can fully understand what it feels like to be a Jew. \u00a0But my periods of residency in Israel and my many visits there (more than I can count, extending back to 1978), my reading, my repeated visits to places like Mauthausen and Buchenwald and Yad Vashem and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and, perhaps most of all, my having\u00a0been raised\u00a0as the son of a man who participated in the liberation of the KZ-Mauthausen death camp \u2014 the very camp in which Simon Wiesenthal was a prisoner \u2014 and who was forever marked by that experience, have not failed to sensitize me to the painful history of the Jews. \u00a0In fact, I\u2019ve been very deliberate about trying to understand it, and to feel it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So I\u2019m not cavalier about this issue. \u00a0Not at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But I want to humbly point out what everybody needs to understand in this regard: \u00a0Latter-day Saints do not regard vicarious baptisms as\u00a0<em>ipso facto<\/em>\u00a0conversions. \u00a0We do not count those for whom such baptisms have been performed on the rolls of our church. \u00a0We see such ordinances as offers, not as coercive. Free, uncompelled human agency is utterly fundamental to our theology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And I also want to point out that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has plainly attempted to be sensitive to Jewish concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Finally, this passage in the\u00a0<em>Tribune<\/em>\u00a0article also caught my eye:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cRadkey also uncovered attempts to baptize people still alive or recently dead such as O.J.
