I retire tomorrow. I have taught at BYU for exactly 30 years; prior to coming here, I taught over a ten year period at Columbia (my alma mater), Notre Dame, and UC Berkeley.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #752801;\">I have had a wonderfully fulfilling career, thanks to outstanding students, extraordinary colleagues, and the constant support of BYU administrators. I owe much of whatever success I have had to my Columbia mentor, Donald Keene, and to my esteemed friend, the great Japanese author, End\u014d Sh\u016bsaku, who allowed me to translate a number of his novels and stories. Publishers and editors have been very kind to me, as have those with whom I have collaborated on various scholarly projects.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #752801;\">I will miss the warm, supportive climate at BYU, but most of all I will miss my daily interactions with truly good people, to whom I express my deepest gratitude and love.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was still quite a junior member of the faculty, but I was nonetheless peripherally involved \u00a0in Van\u2019s hiring. \u00a0An already recognized and accomplished scholar, he represented a major \u201cget\u201d for both our department and the University as a whole. \u00a0To my delight and that of others, he turned out not only to be academically powerful but a delightful and remarkably witty colleague. \u00a0Relatively soon after coming to BYU, he proceeded to serve as the chairman of our Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages \u00a0and then as the dean of the College of Humanities. \u00a0During that period, he also served as a bishop and then as a stake president. \u00a0For a short interval, in fact, owing to some sort of foul-up somewhere, he served simultaneously as both a bishop <em>and<\/em> a stake president \u2014 holding one office in a student stake and the other in his home stake. \u00a0I remember running into him one day in the hall during that time, and I began to crack a joke about his impossible ecclesiastical situation. \u00a0He stopped me short, saying \u201cDon\u2019t even <em>think<\/em> about it! \u00a0My life is <em>over<\/em>!\u201d \u00a0But he was smiling, and good humored as ever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I loved the hand grenade, mounted on a nicely polished wooden base, that sat on his desk. \u00a0Attached to the grenade\u2019s pin was a numbered tag. \u00a0\u201cComplaint Department,\u201d read the sign on the wooden base. \u00a0\u201cTake a number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, he was called to preside over the Oregon Portland Mission of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>. \u00a0Upon his return, I asked him once whether he had used his Japanese at all during his three-year assignment. \u00a0Yes, he replied. \u00a0He had given a blessing to a Japanese woman. \u00a0But, he said, his Japanese had grown a little rusty: \u00a0\u201cI either promised her that she would have a baby or that she would go to the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among his many claims to fame, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2017\/01\/christians-say-hollywood-ignores-ignore-great-films-faith.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Van served for three years as a consultant on Martin Scorsese\u2019s film adaptation of Shusako Endo\u2019s harrowing novel <em>Silence<\/em><\/a>, and I\u2019m grateful to him for introducing me and my wife to that remarkably powerful writer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Van Gessel has long been one of my favorite colleagues at BYU. \u00a0Although, for various reasons, we didn\u2019t actually run into each other very much in recent years, I will sorely miss him. \u00a0The place just won\u2019t be the same.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 I\u2019ve been on the campus of Brigham Young University only once, I believe, since in-person classes were cancelled on 12 March 2020 under the pressure of the coronavirus pandemic. \u00a0This has, obviously, had enormous impact on normal social interactions with students and fellow faculty. \u00a0And it has often caused me to lose track [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[12295,1152,1149,5550,13109,13100,13094,13103,1830,13097,13106,13091],"class_list":["post-86272","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-berkeley","tag-brigham-young-university","tag-byu","tag-california","tag-columbia","tag-endo","tag-gessel","tag-martin-scorsese","tag-notre-dame","tag-shusako","tag-silence","tag-van"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>A remembrance of things past<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
