(Missoula, MT: Mountain Press Publishing Company, 2014) struck me:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Glaciers flowing down this valley and its side canyons scoured the mountain walls, exposing and grinding up gold-bearing veins.\u00a0 Swift mountain streams, able to transport heavy loads, carried the glacial debris downhill, rounding its boulders and cobbles, sorting it by size, and dropping it, gold and all, where they slowed down in the gentler valley below.\u00a0 Nineteenth-century prospectors discovered these stream-formed placer deposits and with simple tools like shovels, goldpans, rockers, and sluices recovered what gold they could from near the top of the deposits.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>But gold is six times as heavy as most rocks and tends to settle in deeper parts of stream deposits.\u00a0 Near Breckenridge the valley has been worked over by a large gold dredge able to scoop up deep coarse gravel mechanically and to separate the gold from it right on the dredge, leaving the left-over gravel tailings in bouldery ridges.\u00a0 <\/strong>(214)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was instantly reminded of such passages as these, which I\u2019ve quoted here before:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>I sent my boy to harness my horse and take her [Lucy Mack Smith, Joseph\u2019s mother] home. \u00a0She wished my wife and daughter to go with her; and they went and spent most of the day.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>When they came home, I questioned them about them [the plates]. \u00a0My daughter said, they were about as much as she could lift. \u00a0They were now in the glass-box, and my wife said they were very heavy. \u00a0They both lifted them.\u00a0. . .<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>While at Mr. Smith\u2019s I hefted the plates, and I knew from the heft that they were lead or gold; and I knew that Joseph had not credit enough to buy so much lead.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>(Martin Harris, cited by Hyrum L. Andrus and Helen Mae Andrus,\u00a0<em>Personal Glimpses of the Prophet Joseph Smith<\/em>\u00a0[American Fork, UT: Covenant Communications, 2009],\u00a034, 35)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>They were not quite as large as this Bible.\u00a0 Could tell whether they were round or square.\u00a0 Could raise the leaves this way (raising a few leaves of the Bible before him).\u00a0 One could easily tell that they were not stone, hewn out to deceive, or even a block of wood. Being a mixture of gold and copper, they were much heavier than stone, and very much heavier than wood.\u00a0 <\/strong>(\u201cThe Old Soldier\u2019s Testimony,\u201d a sermon preached by William B. Smith in the Saints\u2019 Chapel at Deloit, Iowa, on 8 June 1884, and reported by C. E. Butterworth, in <em>The Saint\u2019s Herald<\/em> 31 [1884]: 644)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Along those lines, I append a comment from\u00a0<a class=\"q-box qu-color--gray_dark qu-cursor--pointer qu-hover--textDecoration--underline decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/profile\/Pamela-B-Zohar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pamela B. Zohar<\/a>, made in connection with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/How-heavy-is-a-bar-of-gold-compared-to-other-minerals#:~:text=Pure%20gold%20has%20a%20specific,amount%20of%20water%20would%20mass.&amp;text=So%20gold%20%2D%20compared%20to%20the,rock%20of%20the%20same%20size.\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a completely non-LDS-related entry at Quora<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"q-text qu-display--block\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Pure gold has a specific gravity of 19.32, meaning it masses 19.32 times what a same-sized amount of water would mass.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"q-text qu-display--block\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>The average rock masses around 2.6 times that of water.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"q-text qu-display--block\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>So gold \u2014 compared to the average rock or mineral \u2014 is about 7.4 times heavier (more massive) than a rock of the same size. You would definitely notice the difference.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"q-inlineBlock\">\n<div class=\"q-box\">\n<div class=\"q-relative\">\n<div class=\"q-box\" aria-owns=\"wapfmtb1yi\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-owns=\"wapfmtb1yi\">And this,\u00a0from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/science\/chemistry\/properties-gold\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">OpenLearn<\/a>:<\/div>\n<div aria-owns=\"wapfmtb1yi\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Gold is . . . extremely heavy, with a density of 19.4 g cm-3.
