That last one, of course \u2014 I probably should have warned you before you read it and were traumatized by it \u2014 comes from the Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u00a9, which, as you know, is dedicating to chronicling the horrors and atrocities visited by theistic faith upon a world that would otherwise be a utopian paradise.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

And something else.\u00a0 A reader of this blog who prefers to remain anonymous shared a poem with me that s\/he has written.\u00a0 So I\u2019m sharing it with you:<\/p>\n

To walk a ways<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
While burdened on a lonely path<\/span><\/p>\nAnd senseless of the journey\u2019s end,<\/span><\/p>\nWhile crossing roads my own would pass,<\/span><\/p>\nThe world, unseeing, came and went.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then one day from a nearby trail<\/span><\/p>\nAnother traveler perceived,<\/span><\/p>\nAnd left the goings of his day<\/span><\/p>\nTo come and walk a ways with me.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
He lifted, but the load was such<\/span><\/p>\nThe greatest part must be my own,<\/span><\/p>\nBut I felt the weight not near as much<\/span><\/p>\nBecause I did not walk alone.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then as we walked, I came to see<\/span><\/p>\nHe also labored on the way<\/span><\/p>\nFrom burdens borne through trying years,<\/span><\/p>\nAnd such that I would shrink to trade.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Though now departed to his trail<\/span><\/p>\nAnd duties he had made to wait,<\/span><\/p>\nOn parting till another day,<\/span><\/p>\nI knew he gladly would have stayed.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Yet still with me he travels on,<\/span><\/p>\nFor of this friend a part remains<\/span><\/p>\nWhich makes the burden not so strong<\/span><\/p>\nAnd inspires, with his own, my strength.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Now on my way I look to see<\/span><\/p>\nWho struggles on without a friend,<\/span><\/p>\nAnd knowing what it meant to me,<\/span><\/p>\nI go and walk a ways with them.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u2019re just back from watching (and discussing) the first rough cut of the first half of the two-part docudrama, Undaunted<\/em>, that we\u2019re preparing as a sequel and a support to the Witnesses<\/em> theatrical film.\u00a0 Tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, I have three hours scheduled for interviewing an expert who will appear either in the docudrama or, more likely, in the \u201csnippets,\u201d or perhaps even in both.\u00a0 This project is really taking shape now.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been asked whether I have any thoughts on the subject of Derek Chauvin.\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 (How, realistically, could I not?\u00a0 And not merely because of our almost identical names.)\u00a0 And here are a few of those thoughts:<\/p>\n

\n- In my judgment, Derek Chauvin was properly tried and properly convicted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t follow the case very closely.\u00a0 I have lots of things on my plate and I couldn\u2019t really see any reason for me to watch the trial or spend a great deal of time on it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not on the jury and I don\u2019t need to know the details of the case in order to meet my responsibilities as a citizen.\u00a0 From what I know, however, the jury was rightly constituted and the jurors were evidently attentive \u2014 though I was worried by the lack of sequestration.\u00a0 Legal counsel appeared competent.\u00a0 I\u2019m perfectly fine with the verdict that was reached.<\/p>\n
