Bowen, \u201c\u201cTheir Anger Did Increase Against Me\u201d: Nephi\u2019s Autobiographical Permutation of a Biblical Wordplay on the Name Joseph\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Abstract:<em>\u00a0Nephi\u2019s record on the small plates includes seven distinct scenes in which Nephi depicts the anger of his brethren against him. Each of these scenes includes language that recalls Genesis 37:5\u201210, 20, the biblical scene in which Joseph\u2019s brothers \u201chate him\u00a0<\/em>yet the more [wayy\u00f4sip\u00fb \u02bf\u00f4d]<em>\u00a0for his dreams and for his words\u201d because they fear that he intends to \u201creign\u201d and to \u201chave dominion\u201d or rule over them (Genesis 37:8). Later, they plot to kill him (Genesis 37:20). Two of these \u201canger\u201d scenes culminate in Nephi\u2019s brothers\u2019 bowing down before him in the same way that Joseph\u2019s brothers bowed down in obeisance before him. Nephi permutes the expression\u00a0<\/em>wayy\u00f4sip\u00fb \u02bf\u00f4d<em>\u00a0in terms of his brothers\u2019 \u201ccontinuing\u201d and \u201cincreasing\u201d anger, which eventually ripens into a hatred that permanently divides the family. Nephi uses language that represents other\u00a0<\/em>y\u0101sap\/y\u00f4s\u00eep<em>\u00a0+ verbal-complement constructions in these \u201canger\u201d scenes, usage that recalls the name Joseph in such a way as to link Nephi with his ancestor. The most surprising iteration of Nephi\u2019s permuted \u201cJoseph\u201d wordplay occurs in his own psalm (2 Nephi\u00a04:16\u201235).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/scary-ghost-stories-in-the-light-of-day\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Allen Wyatt, \u201cScary Ghost Stories in the Light of Day\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Review of Carol Lynn Pearson,\u00a0<em>The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy: Haunting the Hearts and Heaven of Mormon Women and Men.<\/em>\u00a0Walnut Creek, CA: Pivot Point Books, 2016. 242 pp. $19.95.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/the-great-and-spacious-book-of-mormon-arcade-game-more-curious-works-from-book-of-mormon-critics\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeff Lindsay, \u201cThe Great and Spacious Book of Mormon Arcade Game: More Curious Works from Book of Mormon Critics\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Abstract:<em>\u00a0A novel theory for the origins of Lehi\u2019s vision of the Tree of Life has been offered by Rick Grunder, who argues that the story was inspired by a June 1829 visit to Rochester where Joseph could have seen a \u201cgreat and spacious building,\u201d a river, an iron railing, and even fruit trees. The purported source for the great and spacious building, the Reynolds Arcade, has even been suggested by one critic as a place where Joseph might have found \u201crare maps,\u201d such as a map of Arabia that could have guided his fabrication of Lehi\u2019s trail. As beautiful as such theories may be to their champions, they utterly fail to account for Nephi\u2019s text.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>Among the shortcomings of Grunder\u2019s theory and creative extensions of it, the timing is problematic, for Joseph\u2019s visit to Rochester likely occurred well after 1 Nephi was dictated. The proposed parallels offer little explanatory power for Book of Mormon creation. (For comparison, two online appendices for this article have been provided to illustrate how interesting random parallels can be found that may be more compelling than those Grunder offers.<sup>1<\/sup>) Further, any inspiration from a visit to Rochester as the plates of Nephi were being translated fails to account for the influence of Lehi\u2019s vision and Nephi\u2019s text on other portions of the Book of Mormon that were translated long before Joseph\u2019s trip to Rochester. Finally, Nephi\u2019s account of the vision of the Tree of Life and surrounding text cannot be reasonably explained by Grunder\u2019s theory of last-minute fabrication inspired by Rochester or by any other theory of modern fabrication, as it is far too rooted in the ancient world and far too artfully crafted to have come from Joseph Smith and his environment.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/experiencing-battle-in-the-book-of-mormon\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Morgan Deane, \u201cExperiencing Battle in the Book of Mormon\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Abstract:\u00a0<em>Historical chronicles of military conflict normally focus on the decisions and perspectives of leaders. But new methodologies, pioneered by John Keegan\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>Face of Battle<em>, have focused attention on the battle experience of the common soldier. Applying this methodology to a careful reading of details within the Book of Mormon shows an experience in battle that is just as horrific as it is authentic.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/this-son-shall-comfort-us-an-onomastic-tale-of-two-noahs\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew L. Bowen, \u201c\u201cThis Son Shall Comfort Us\u201d: An Onomastic Tale of Two Noahs\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Abstract:<em>\u00a0From an etiological perspective, the Hebrew Bible connects the name Noah with two distinct but somewhat homonymous verbal roots: nw<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u00a0(\u201crest\u201d) and n<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>m (\u201ccomfort,\u201d \u201cregret\u201d [sometimes \u201crepent\u201d]). Significantly, the Enoch and Noah material in the revealed text of the Joseph Smith Translation of Genesis (especially Moses 7\u20138) also connects the name Noah in a positive sense to the earth\u2019s \u201crest\u201d and the Lord\u2019s covenant with Enoch after the latter \u201crefuse[d] to be comforted\u201d regarding the imminent destruction of humanity in the flood. The Book of Mormon, on the other hand, connects the name Noah pejoratively to Hebrew nw<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u00a0(\u201crest\u201d) and n<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>m (\u201ccomfort\u201d and \u201crepentance\u201d [regret]) in a negative evaluation of King Noah, the son of Zeniff. King Noah causes his people to \u201clabor exceedingly to support iniquity\u201d (Mosiah\u00a011:6), gives \u201crest\u201d to his wicked and corrupt priests (Mosiah\u00a011:11), and anesthetizes his people in their sins with his winemaking. Noah and his people\u2019s refusal to \u201crepent\u201d and their martyring of Abinadi result in their coming into hard bondage to the Lamanites. Mormon\u2019s text further demonstrates how the Lord eventually \u201ccomforts\u201d Noah\u2019s former subjects after their \u201csore repentance\u201d and \u201csincere repentance\u201d from their iniquity and abominations, providing them a typological deliverance that points forward to the atonement of Jesus Christ.<\/em><span id=\"more-10014\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/the-title-of-liberty-and-ancient-prophecy\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">RoseAnn Benson, \u201cThe Title of Liberty and Ancient Prophecy\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Abstract:<em>\u00a0Captain Moroni cites a prophecy regarding Joseph of Egypt and his posterity that is not recorded in the Bible.
