Esplin<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #802a00;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cody Quirk kindly brought this interesting article, written by <a class=\"cc-listed-item-block-text__author-link GoogleAnalyticsET-processed decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christiancentury.org\/dawn-araujo-hawkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dawn Araujo-Hawkins<\/a> in <em>The Christian Century,<\/em> to my attention:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christiancentury.org\/article\/features\/why-are-so-many-most-influential-moms-internet-mormon?fbclid=IwAR3jSW1DWumeXnQHBeLdPCol1ttpMj0D5OcXjPU-BwY7UT73PgzCpGumz9I\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhy are so many of the most influential moms on the internet Mormon?\u00a0 Influencer culture and LDS theology fit together surprisingly well.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And some of you may find this item from the <em>Deseret News<\/em> interesting, as well:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/faith\/2021\/10\/26\/22741395\/what-utah-can-teach-the-country-about-lgbtq-rights-and-religion-religious-freedom-conversion-therapy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhat Utah can teach the country about gay rights and religion: A new video celebrates the state of Utah\u2019s efforts to broaden LGBTQ rights and religious freedom protections at the same time\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As someone whose general inclination runs somewhat (though not quite entirely) libertarian, I\u2019m not entirely happy with the so-called \u201cUtah compromise.\u201d\u00a0 (This has absolutely nothing to do with my Latter-day Saint position on homosexual behavior.)\u00a0 As a realist who is fully aware that his quasi-libertarian views aren\u2019t widely shared, though, I recognize that politics is the art of the possible.\u00a0 I understand that compromise is essential.\u00a0 This, therefore, may be the best that can be done.\u00a0 And it\u2019s not all that bad.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m late in sharing this piece by Harvard\u2019s Roger Porter (a Latter-day Saint and a personal acquaintance), but I think it still worthwhile:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/opinion\/2021\/10\/19\/22734664\/colin-powell-doctrine-rotc-leadership-dies-alma-american-journey-secretary-of-state\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cColin Powell: A great leader\u2019s American journey\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #802a00;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancel culture\u201d on what, I suppose, likes to call itself the religious, cultural, and political \u201cRight\u201d these days:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/fired-endorsing-vaccines-evangelical-insider-121251564.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cFired After Endorsing Vaccines, Evangelical Insider Takes a Leadership Role\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was struck by this slightly longish but powerful article in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, by an author who is himself a professing Christian:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/10\/evangelical-trump-christians-politics\/620469\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Evangelical Church is Breaking Apart: Christians must reclaim Jesus from his church.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I like to think that the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> is less susceptible to such forces, and I still believe that it is.\u00a0 Sadly, though, I\u2019m no longer confident that we\u2019re immune.\u00a0 So I don\u2019t share the link above in order for us to point a condescending finger at Evangelical Protestants.\u00a0 I share it to warn against such things in our own midst.\u00a0 \u201cTherefore, send not to know for whom the bell tolls.\u00a0 It tolls for thee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I worry very much about what I see as a tendency among the Saints to put certain social values or political ideologies ahead of the Restored Gospel, and to view it through their lens rather than vice versa.\u00a0 It reminds me more than a little bit of Elder Neal A. Maxwell\u2019s well-known explanation that, ideally, \u201cthe LDS scholar has his citizenship in the kingdom but carries his passport into the professional world, not the other way around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also reminds me, unfortunately, of some famous scriptural passages:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #802a00;\">And if it seem evil unto you to serve the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>.\u00a0 (Joshua 24:15)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"p14\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128361568\"><span style=\"color: #802a00;\">And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut\u00a0off from among the people; for they have strayed from mine ordinances, and have broken mine everlasting covenant; they seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon the great, which shall fall.\u00a0 (Doctrine and Covenants 1:14-16)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #802a00;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our timing was perfect on this trip.\u00a0 Sheer genius, one might say (except that it was determined many weeks ago):\u00a0 A storm of historic proportions brought a huge amount of rain and snow to California on Monday, so our plan of driving only to Elko that day turned out very well.\u00a0 On Tuesday, driving conditions were perfect, and we\u2019re now sitting (to coin a phrase) in a winter wonderland.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On a more irritating but slightly related note, it seems that the Hallmark Channel and Lifetime have already begun showing Christmas movies.\u00a0 Soon, within the United States anyway, the Christmas season will launch on the morning after Independence Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #802a00;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another little story, not particularly significant or edifying, of an experience in the Sierras:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One summer, when I was probably just entering into my teenage years, my Dad invited me to go along with him the next day. \u00a0He had a \u201cjob walk\u201d up in the Sierra Nevada mountains. \u00a0What that meant was that a potential client \u2014 I think that, in this case, it was Southern California Edison, the electric utility \u2014 was inviting a group of contractors up to inspect a site where work was to be done. \u00a0Afterwards, they would all prepare and submit competitive bids.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was a long drive, and he wanted company. \u00a0I went along. \u00a0I love the Sierras anyway, so this was really pleasant and it was great to spend time one on one with my Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the destination first, even before the officials who were to take us around the job site. \u00a0None of the other contractors had yet appeared, either. \u00a0Perfect. \u00a0It was beautiful. \u00a0There were pine trees and a cascading river.\u00a0 And we had it all to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a while, though, the others <em>still<\/em> hadn\u2019t arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We waited and waited.\u00a0 And waited.\u00a0 We grew puzzled. \u00a0Finally, Dad opened his appointment book and discovered, to his horror, that the job walk was scheduled for the same day . . .<em> in a week<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instantly, he turned to me and asked, \u201cDan, how much is it worth to you not to tell your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Northstar, California<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 *** \u00a0 Newly up today, from Kyler Rasmussen, on the website of the Interpreter Foundation: \u00a0 \u201cEstimating the Evidence Episode Episode 17: On Geographical Consistency\u201d [Editor\u2019s Note: This is the seventeenth in a series of 23 essays summarizing and evaluating Book of Mormon-related evidence from a Bayesian statistical perspective.
