Peterson<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #850303;\"><em><strong>Abstract:\u00a0<\/strong>As religious holidays go, Christmas has been domesticated unusually well \u2014 and effectively commercialized \u2014 among people and even whole cultures that don\u2019t accept (or even care about) the central theological claim that Christmas asserts. After all, who doesn\u2019t like cute little babies, at least when they\u2019re not crying? But that theological claim is stunning. Radical. It\u2019s radical in the strictest sense of that word, because it goes down deep, to the very root (Latin <\/em>radix<em>). Beyond the pleasant and comfortable sentimentality of favorite holiday foods, scenes of carolers in snowy villages, and warm family gatherings, Christmas dramatically distinguishes Christianity from every other major world religion.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I apologize.\u00a0 But there it is.\u00a0 And, at this point, there\u2019s nothing that can be done about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #850303;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a retelling of part of the traditional Christmas story by the man who was probably America\u2019s most popular poet during the nineteenth century:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u201cThe Three Kings,\u201d by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Three Kings came riding from far away,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Melchior and Gaspar and Baltasar;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Three Wise Men out of the East were they,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And they travelled by night and they slept by day,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">For their guide was a beautiful, wonderful star.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The star was so beautiful, large and clear,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">That all the other stars of the sky<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Became a white mist in the atmosphere,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And by this they knew that the coming was near<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Of the Prince foretold in the prophecy.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Three caskets they bore on their saddle-bows,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Three caskets of gold with golden keys;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Their robes were of crimson silk with rows<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Of bells and pomegranates and furbelows,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Their turbans like blossoming almond-trees.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And so the Three Kings rode into the West,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Through the dusk of the night, over hill and dell,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And sometimes they nodded with beard on breast,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And sometimes talked, as they paused to rest,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">With the people they met at some wayside well.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u201cOf the child that is born,\u201d said Baltasar,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u201cGood people, I pray you, tell us the news;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">For we in the East have seen his star,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And have ridden fast, and have ridden far,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">To find and worship the King of the Jews.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And the people answered, \u201cYou ask in vain;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">We know of no King but Herod the Great!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">They thought the Wise Men were men insane,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">As they spurred their horses across the plain,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Like riders in haste, who cannot wait.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And when they came to Jerusalem,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Herod the Great, who had heard this thing,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Sent for the Wise Men and questioned them;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And said, \u201cGo down unto Bethlehem,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And bring me tidings of this new king.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">So they rode away; and the star stood still,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The only one in the grey of morn;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Yes, it stopped\u2014it stood still of its own free will,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Right over Bethlehem on the hill,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The city of David, where Christ was born.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And the Three Kings rode through the gate and the guard,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Through the silent street, till their horses turned<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And neighed as they entered the great inn-yard;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">But the windows were closed, and the doors were barred,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And only a light in the stable burned.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And cradled there in the scented hay,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">In the air made sweet by the breath of kine,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The little child in the manger lay,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The child, that would be king one day<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Of a kingdom not human, but divine.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">His mother Mary of Nazareth<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Sat watching beside his place of rest,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Watching the even flow of his breath,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">For the joy of life and the terror of death<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Were mingled together in her breast.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">They laid their offerings at his feet:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The gold was their tribute to a King,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The frankincense, with its odor sweet,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Was for the Priest, the Paraclete,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">The myrrh for the body\u2019s burying.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And the mother wondered and bowed her head,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And sat as still as a statue of stone,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Her heart was troubled yet comforted,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Remembering what the Angel had said<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Of an endless reign and of David\u2019s throne.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">Then the Kings rode out of the city gate,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">With a clatter of hoofs in proud array;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">But they went not back to Herod the Great,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">For they knew his malice and feared his hate,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #850303;\">And returned to their homes by another image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How many \u201cwise men\u201d were there, according to the gospel of Matthew?\u00a0 (They\u2019re only mentioned in Matthew.)\u00a0 The text doesn\u2019t say.\u00a0 And it certainly doesn\u2019t give their names.\u00a0 There were probably at <em>least<\/em> three.\u00a0 The distinctly \u201cdual\u201d form of Greek nouns and verbs \u2014 as opposed to the singular and the plural \u2014 had fallen pretty much into disuse by the time of the New Testament\u2019s <em>koin\u00e9<\/em> dialect.\u00a0 Still, if there had been only two, that could have been specifically indicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, for a little bit of background on the so-called \u201cwise men,\u201d see the article that the late (and much lamented) Bill Hamblin and I published in the <em>Deseret News<\/em> back on 13 December 2014:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2014\/12\/13\/20554671\/who-were-the-wise-men#the-journey-of-the-three-wise-men-in-new-line-cinemas-release-of-catherine-hardwickes-drama-the-nativity-story-in-2006\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWho were the \u2018wise men\u2019?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You might also find this Hamblin\/Peterson column of interest,
