Nibley, at the time a professor emeritus of ancient scriptures, at Brigham Young University, presented a series of 26 lectures to an Honors class on The Pearl of Great Price. This class was videotaped in the Maeser Building and made available by FARMS as both video and audio recordings. The text was then transcribed and included in <em>Ancient Documents and the Pearl of Great Price<\/em>, published by Deseret Book.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I find myself curiously serene about this prospect:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/article\/what-climate-change-means-for-future-of-coffee-cashew-avocado?cmpid=org=ngp::mc=crm-email::src=ngp::cmp=editorial::add=Planet_Possible_20220201::rid=9775193AA9AC254A9CB687D37AD79AB7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhat climate change means for the future of coffee and other popular foods: While farming coffee will be more challenging in a warmer climate, some countries will be able to grow more cashews and avocados, a new study finds.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I continue to go through previous blog entries here, extracting entries that I think have continuing relevance to topics on which I\u2019m writing.\u00a0 Here are two more.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first comes from the astronomer and physicist Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001), who was typically an overt atheist.\u00a0 As time went by, however, he appeared to mellow, and to have Doubts:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><b>Would you not say to yourself, in whatever language supercalculating intellects use, \u201cSome supercalculating intellect must have designed the properties of the carbon atom, otherwise the chance of my finding such an atom through the blind forces of nature would be less than 1 part in 10<\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b><sup>40000<\/sup><\/b><\/span><b>.\u201d \u00a0Of course you would. . . . \u00a0I have always been intrigued by the remarkable relation of the 7.65 Mev energy level in the nucleus of\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b><sup>12<\/sup><\/b><\/span><b>C to the 7.12 Mev level in\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b><sup>16<\/sup><\/b><\/span><b>O. If you wanted to produce carbon and oxygen in roughly equal quantities by stellar nucleosynthesis, these are the two levels you would have to fix . . . \u00a0A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. \u00a0<\/b>[Sir Fred Hoyle, \u201cThe Universe: Past and Present Reflections,\u201d\u00a0<i>Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics <\/i>20 (September 1982): 16]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second comes from the relatively recently departed\u00a0Freeman J. Dyson (1923-2020), an eminent English-born American theoretical physicist and mathematician who was associated for many years with Princeton\u2019s Institute for Advanced Study:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><b>Science and religion are two windows that people look through, trying to understand the big universe outside, trying to understand why we are here. \u00a0The two windows give different views, but they look out at the same universe. \u00a0Both views are one-sided, neither is complete. \u00a0Both leave out essential features of the real world. \u00a0And both are worthy of respect. . . . \u00a0 Trouble arises when either science or religion claims universal jurisdiction, when either religious dogma or scientific dogma claims to be infallible. \u00a0Religious creationists and scientific materialists are equally dogmatic and insensitive. \u00a0By their arrogance they bring both science and religion into disrepute. \u00a0The media exaggerate their numbers and importance. \u00a0The media rarely mention the fact that the great majority of religious people belong to moderate denominations that treat science with respect, or the fact that the great majority of scientists treat religion with respect so long as religion does not claim jurisdiction over scientific questions.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And please don\u2019t forget that tomorrow, 2 February, is Groundhog Day.\u00a0 Perhaps you\u2019ll find time to watch the great film that bears that title.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a blog entry about it that I posted several years ago:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong><i>Groundhog Day\u00a0<\/i>is the greatest movie ever made<i>.<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>And I\u2019m not the only one who thinks so:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2006\/02\/movie-all-time-jonah-goldberg-2\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>\u201cA Movie for All Time,\u201d by Jonah Goldberg<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>Of course, that\u2019s not denying that there are some other good ones out there, like\u00a0<i><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Lives_of_Others\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Das Leben der Anderen<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and the original\u00a0<i><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Manchurian_Candidate_(1962_film)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Manchurian Candidate<\/a>.<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>But . . . well, they can\u2019t\u00a0<i>all<\/i>\u00a0be winners.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>Incidentally, I like\u00a0<i>The Manchurian Candidate<\/i>\u00a0even\u00a0<i>apart<\/i>\u00a0from the scene where Angela Lansbury\u2019s character gets shot.\u00a0 That part just makes it even\u00a0<i>better<\/i>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>I can\u2019t account for my wholly irrational dislike of Angela Lansbury.\u00a0 By all accounts, she\u2019s a very talented lady, and extraordinarily nice.\u00a0 But there you have it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>I also enjoy the scene in\u00a0<i>Titanic<\/i>\u00a0where Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s character dies.\u00a0 From my perspective, it\u2019s the movie\u2019s high point.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>Does anybody know of a film in which Hugh Grant bites the dust?\u00a0 That would complete a perfect trifecta, in my view.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>Another\u00a0<em>hommage<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Groundhog Day<\/em> can be viewed here, in this short video clip that was made specifically for . . . well, <em>Groundhog Day<\/em>:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AnhzGUcENWo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeep\u00ae | \u201cGroundhog Day\u201d | Bill Murray | 02.02.2020<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Ka\u2019anapali, Maui, Hawai\u02bbi<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 *** \u00a0 Audio Roundtable: Come, Follow Me Old Testament Lesson 7 \u201cTo Be a Greater Follower of Righteousness\u201d: Genesis 12\u201317;
