Nibley, professor emeritus of ancient scriptures, presented a series of 26 lectures to an Honors class on The Pearl of Great Price. This class was videotaped in the Maeser Building and made available by FARMS as both video and audio recordings. The text was then transcribed and included in\u00a0<em>Ancient Documents and the Pearl of Great Price<\/em>, published by Deseret Book.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are some reading notes that I wrote up at least fifteen years ago.\u00a0 I share them in case one or two folks out there might be interested:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">In 150 years of controversy, battle lines have too often been drawn between agnostic evolutionists, on the one hand, and biblical literalists on the other.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The debate is actually far more complex, and much more interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">Israeli-American physicist Gerald Schroeder trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His 1997 book, <i>The Science of God<\/i>,<i> <\/i>not only seeks to harmonize science and biblical religion but to do so without expecting either side to yield much territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">Schroeder contends that science itself refutes extreme evolutionists\u2019 faith in an aimless universe. Did life emerge from random, undirected processes?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not a chance, he says.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The game has been rigged.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cTo this observer of nature, our universe looks like a put-up job.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">He points, for example, to the astonishing commonness of carbon, the indispensable basis of all known life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Given the way it forms, it should be extraordinarily rare.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Furthermore, if one of the \u201cconstants\u201d involved in the energy of the \u201cbig bang\u201d that began our universe were different by one part in 10 to the 120<sup>th<\/sup> power\u2014that is, by a fraction with a numerator of 1 over a denominator of 1 followed by 120 zeroes, no life would exist anywhere.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As University of Chicago astrophysicist Michael Turner says, \u201cThe precision is as if one could throw a dart across the entire universe and hit a bulls-eye one millimeter in diameter on the other side.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Oxford mathematician Roger Penrose studies the seconds immediately following the big bang.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The laws of nature are so perfectly tuned for life, he says, that they must have been chosen by an intelligent Creator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">Schroeder does not dispute evolution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And unlike Richard Milton, the British science writer whose fascinating <i>Shattering the Myths of Darwinism<\/i> insists that we really don\u2019t know how old the earth is, he accepts planetary and cosmic ages in the billions of years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But here is where his most original argument surfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">Using Einstein\u2019s relativity theory and its predictions of the compression and dilation of time, Schroeder says that everything depends on whether our perspective is from the earth or that of the cosmos as a whole.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhen one asks if six days or fifteen billion years passed before the appearance of humankind,\u201d he declares, \u201cthe correct answer is \u2018yes.\u2019\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And he is able to correlate the six days of Genesis with the sequence of events accepted by contemporary science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">For many years, advocates of \u201cpurposeless chance\u201d took vague refuge in \u201clots and lots of time.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whatever seemed mysterious, impossible to explain or to demonstrate, simply must have happened over billions and billions of years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In particular, they said, life gradually emerged from random processes in a primordial inorganic soup.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet we know now that single-celled life began almost instantly after the earth cooled and water appeared, 3.8 billion years ago.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There simply wasn\u2019t time for amino acids to combine randomly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">But then, unexpectedly, 3.2 billion years passed, during which life remained confined to single-cell organisms.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing suggests the gradual development that Darwin imagined.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One is reminded, instead, of the way one soldier described war:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201clong periods of boredom, punctuated by brief moments of sheer terror.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">The basic anatomies common to all living creatures appeared only 530 million years ago, simultaneously, with no hint from earlier fossils.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(The evidence for this so-called \u201cCambrian explosion\u201d was found in 1909, but effectively suppressed and forgotten until the 1980s.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since then, no new phyla or basic anatomical structures have appeared.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even developments within phyla occur without warning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wingless creatures suddenly disappear from the fossil record, and are replaced by creatures with fully developed large wings\u2014in some cases, 30 centimeters across.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Jurassic marine reptile ichthyosaurus appears completely formed, with a fish-like body, fins, paddles, and bill.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After a hundred million years, at its extinction, it is identical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #6b2401;\">Current theories suggest that our ancestors were separated from their ape kin by the tectonic shift that created the Afro-Syrian rift eight million years ago.
