Abstract:\u00a0<\/strong>The verbal expression \u201cwe might have enjoyed,\u201d as used in a\u00a0complaint that Nephi attributes to his brothers, \u201cwe might have enjoyed our possessions and the land of our inheritance\u201d (1\u00a0Nephi\u00a017:21), reflects a\u00a0use of the Hebrew verb yr\u0161 in its progressive aspect, \u201cto enjoy possession of.\u201d This meaning is evident in several passages in the Hebrew Bible, and perhaps most visibly in the KJV translation of Numbers\u00a036:8 (\u201cAnd every daughter, that possesseth [Hebrew y\u014dre\u0161et] an inheritance [na\u1e25\u0103l\u00e2] in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy [y\u00eer\u0161\u00fb] every man the inheritance [na\u1e25\u0103lat] of his fathers\u201d) and Joshua\u00a01:15 (\u201cthen ye shall return unto the land of your possession [l\u0115\u02beere\u1e63 y\u0115ru\u0161\u0161atkem or, unto the land of your inheritance], and enjoy it [w\u00eeri\u0161tem \u02be\u00f4t\u0101h].\u201d Examining Laman and Lemuel\u2019s complaint in a\u00a0legal context helps us better appreciate \u201cland[s] of \u2026 inheritance\u201d as not just describing a\u00a0family estate, but as also expressing a\u00a0seminal Abrahamic Covenant concept in numerous Book\u00a0of\u00a0Mormon passages, including the covenant implications of the resettlement of the converted Lamanites and reconverted Zoramites as refugees in \u201cthe land of Jershon\u201d (\u201cplace of inheritance\u201d).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I spent the early afternoon today at a luncheon in the Ernest L. Wilkinson Student Center that was hosted by Brigham Young University\u2019s College of Religious Education for winners of the College\u2019s annual essay competition, and I briefly spoke at it.\u00a0 Many of the students in attendance were given generous cash prizes.\u00a0 All of the prize-winning writers were given a stack of gifts from various supporting organizations, including the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, BYU Studies, Book of Mormon Central, and the Interpreter Foundation.\u00a0 Our contribution to the pile of gifts was a DVD of the Foundation\u2019s theatrical film Witnesses<\/em>, accompanied by a letter from me that ran as follows:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since its founding in early August, 2012, the Interpreter Foundation (https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/<\/span><\/a>) has been dedicated to considering, defending, and commending the scriptures and doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints.\u00a0 <\/span>It has emerged as a major source of new, original, insightful, and faithful scholarship on our scriptures, temples, and the ancient world, and a rich fountain of original research that is, in turn, popularized by Book of Mormon Central, FAIR, and others in order to reach a broad audience of non-members and members via videos, written materials, and social and other media.<\/span><\/p>\n

At noon today, the Interpreter Foundation marked its five hundredth consecutive week of publishing at least one new article in its peer-reviewed online journal, which is accessible at no charge.\u00a0 <\/span>(Many weeks, we\u2019ve published two or even three.). Every Sunday evening, the Interpreter Radio Show<\/i> broadcasts two hours of live discussion about Latter-day Saint scriptures, history, and doctrine, which are then archived and made freely available online.\u00a0 <\/span>Last year, the Foundation\u2019s first dramatic film, Witnesses<\/i>, played in theaters across the United States; it is now available to the public via DVD and streaming.\u00a0 <\/span>In a couple of weeks, on Friday evening, 4 March, the Foundation\u2019s related docudrama, Undaunted: Witnesses of the Book of Mormon<\/i>, will premiere at the annual LDS Film Festival and our next film project will be announced.\u00a0 <\/span>Interpreter also maintains an active blog, sponsors conferences, and publishes books.<\/span><\/p>\n

All of this is done by an almost entirely volunteer organization.\u00a0 <\/span>We welcome manuscript submissions and we welcome committed volunteers.\u00a0 <\/span>If you believe that the Restored Gospel, its scriptures, and its doctrines are worthy of serious thinking and reflection, we hope that you\u2019ll take an interest in the work of Interpreter.\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, we hope that you\u2019ll join us.\u00a0 <\/span>We can always use more help.<\/span><\/p>\n
