We had dinner with a long-time friend of mine \u2014 he was at our wedding in the Salt Lake Temple many years ago \u2014 tonight in Cedar City, Utah.\u00a0 We ate, by his choice, at Centro Woodfired Pizzeria<\/a>.\u00a0 We\u2019ve eaten there several times before.\u00a0 It\u2019s very good.\u00a0 (I simply like to give compliments where compliments are due.)<\/p>\n

Neither modern speakers of English nor the King James translation of the Bible make much\u00a0distinction between thieves and robbers. \u00a0Anciently, though, and particularly in Hebrew law, the distinction was a strong one: \u00a0Thieves were locals who robbed from their neighbors. \u00a0They were dealt with civilly, usually by a court drawn from their townsmen. \u00a0Robbers, by contrast, were outsiders. \u00a0They were handled militarily, and could be summarily executed. \u00a0The Book of Mormon conforms to precisely that ancient Hebrew distinction. \u00a0(248-249)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The execution of the captured Gadianton robber chief Zemnarihah (3 Nephi 4:28) fits its claimed ancient background in several striking ways. \u00a0First, ancient Jewish law required the felling of a tree that had been used for an execution, just as the tree was felled from which Zemnarihah was hanged. \u00a0Second, trees used for executions were chopped down and buried so that they would not be sad memorials or reminders of the execution\u2019s victim \u2013and the Nephites explicitly remembered Zemnarihah and his tree in that very way. \u00a0Third, hanging was, in fact, a genuinely ancient Hebrew form of execution. \u00a0Fourth, executions were often carried out \u2014 as Zemharihah\u2019s was \u2014 in a way or place peculiarly appropriate to the offense being punished. \u00a0Fifth and last, there seems, in Zemnarihah\u2019s case, to be an echo of the ancient Hebrew practice of \u201cheralding\u201d a notorious execution. \u00a0(250-252)<\/p>\n
