Rasband Meets with Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi: The Maputo meeting was the first ever held between a Church leader and a Mozambican head of state\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n ***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n A short while back, I posted something that mentioned my encounter, years ago, with the man who then served as the \u201cGrand Mufti\u201d for the Muslims of Australia<\/a>.\u00a0 I was pleasantly surprised, accordingly, while looking to find something else, that I had posted another<\/em> entry about him during a subsequent visit to Sydney, Australia, in November of 2018.\u00a0 It was entitled \u201cIn Australia but not even remotely of Australia.\u201d\u00a0 Here is what I wrote then:<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n One of the more striking experiences that I had during my last trip to Australia prior to this one was a visit to the Lakemba Mosque<\/a> (aka the Masjid Ali Bin Abi Talib), in the Sydney suburb of Lakemba.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I was taken there by the late Elder Paul Sybrowsky<\/a>\u00a0(1944-2014) of the Seventy, who, based in Sydney, was serving at the time as the Australia area president for the Church. \u00a0I\u2019m guessing that this was somewhere around 2010 or so. \u00a0Maybe a bit before that.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The point of the visit was to meet with\u00a0Taj El-Din Hilaly<\/a>\u00a0(\u062a\u0627\u062c \u0627\u0644\u062f\u064a\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0647\u0644\u0627\u0644\u064a<\/span>\u200e), who had been and maybe still was at the time the imam of that Sunni mosque and who, by appointment of the\u00a0Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, had been serving\u00a0as the mufti<\/em>\u00a0of Australia since 1988. \u00a0(He apparently liked to refer to himself as the\u00a0Grand Mufti of Australia and New Zealand, although not everybody \u2014 not even all Sunni Muslims \u2014 recognized him as holding such a position.)<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n A mufti, of course, is a qualified scholar of Islamic law who is authorized to give advisory legal opinions \u2014 non-binding, non-government enforced rulings \u2014 in response to questions from believers. \u00a0(For a fuller explanation, see \u201cWhat a fatwa<\/em> is and is not.\u201d<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The visit went well enough, but I came away with quite a negative impression. \u00a0Imam Hilaly had, by that point, been in Australia for the better part of three decades, but my sense was that he would have found it exceedingly difficult to carry on a prolonged conversation in English or to read an Australian newspaper. \u00a0The area immediately surrounding the mosque looked to me then like a bit of the Middle East, transported to Australia and plopped down into suburban Sydney. \u00a0Everything around it looked and felt Arabic, and all of the signage around it was in Arabic. \u00a0And yet, in his roles as imam and as mufti, one of Hilaly\u2019s major responsibilities was surely to advise Muslims living in Australia \u2014 many of whom aren\u2019t even of Arab extraction \u2014 how to negotiate life in this country as faithful practitioners of Islam. \u00a0But he himself could scarcely be said really to be in Australia at all, other than geographically.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n
