charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95699\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/07\/main_image_deep_field_smacs0723-5mb-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-95699\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/07\/main_image_deep_field_smacs0723-5mb-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoing Hubble!\" width=\"597\" height=\"609\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Joe Biden unveiled this image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, known as Webb\u2019s First Deep Field, during a White House event on Monday, 11 July 2022.<br>Webb\u2019s image covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm\u2019s length by someone on the ground \u2014 and reveals thousands of galaxies in a tiny sliver of an inconceivably vast universe<br>(Public domain image from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I hope to see you at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/conference\/august-2022-fair-conference\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the annual FAIR conference this week<\/a>.\u00a0 It begins tomorrow (Wednesday) and will continue through my sorry performance late on Friday afternoon or relatively early on Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last night, my wife and I shared a meal with sixteen of our closest friends in a restaurant in Draper and then attended a performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/hct.org\/Online\/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=SilentSky&amp;BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Silent Sky<\/em><\/a> at the Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy.\u00a0 As far as I could tell, all of us thoroughly enjoyed it.\u00a0 I certainly did.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Silent Sky<\/em> is based on the remarkable true story of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henrietta_Swan_Leavitt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921)<\/a>, who, despite the sadly limited opportunities available to women at the time and although she died relatively young, made a major discovery while working at the Harvard College Observatory that was eventually used to prove that many other galaxies in exist in the universe beyond our own Milky Way.\u00a0 Eventually, \u201cLeavitt\u2019s Law\u201d was also fundamental to the work of Edwin Hubble in demonstrating that the universe is expanding.\u00a0 (Hubble said that she should have won the Nobel Prize.)\u00a0 A number of years ago, I read and really liked George Johnson\u2019s 2006 book <span class=\"a-size-extra-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Miss-Leavitts-Stars-Discovered-Discoveries\/dp\/0393328562\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=LM204Y3WNK5S&amp;keywords=Miss+Leavitt%27s+Stars&amp;qid=1659463885&amp;sprefix=Norbert+Duckwit%2Caps%2C221&amp;sr=8-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Miss Leavitt\u2019s Stars: The Untold Story of the Woman Who Discovered How to Measure the Universe<\/em><\/a> and Dava Sobel\u2019s 2016 publication of\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-extra-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Glass-Universe-Harvard-Observatory-Measure\/dp\/0143111345\/ref=asc_df_0143111345\/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=312152840806&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=11318316733752301803&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=1026980&amp;hvtargid=pla-546283906766&amp;psc=1&amp;tag=&amp;ref=&amp;adgrpid=61316181319&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvadid=312152840806&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=11318316733752301803&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=1026980&amp;hvtargid=pla-546283906766\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of the Harvard Observatory Took the Measure of the Stars<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the performance is accompanied by a display in the theater\u2019s lobby that includes replicas of the tools and the notebooks that were used to measure stars by the women portrayed in the play. The theater credits Dr. Sarah Lavalee and the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University for their generous cooperation in granting access to the relevant archived materials.\u00a0 Moreover, the final image of the show appears courtesy of the James Webb Space Telescope and NASA.\u00a0 It was taken from among a group of Webb images that were only released to the public on 12 July 2022.\u00a0 On a personal note:\u00a0 My attendance at last night\u2019s performance of <em>Silent Sky<\/em> couldn\u2019t possibly have been more timely for me than it was: Just yesterday, I published an article in <a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Meridian Magazine<\/em><\/a> that is a reflection on one of the images from, well, the Webb Space Telescope:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Please see my little essay on <a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/contemplating-our-place-in-the-vastness-of-the-universe\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cContemplating Our Place in the Vastness of the Universe.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One quibble:\u00a0 The play, written by Lauren Gunderson and dating to 2015, depicts Henrietta Swan Leavitt as agnostic or indifferent toward religion.\u00a0 I would need to return to the two books mentioned above in order to check what they might have to say about the issue.\u00a0 But she was, as the play itself depicts her, the daughter of a Congregationalist minister and, much more to the point, the Wikipedia article about her says that \u201cHenrietta Leavitt remained deeply religious and committed to her church throughout her life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As I write, I\u2019ve been listening to music by The Byrds, who were one of my very favorite rock bands as I was growing up in 1960s California.\u00a0 (I once saw them perform live, and I saw individual members of the group perform independently thereafter.\u00a0 I was a serious fan.\u00a0 They\u2019re why I own a twelve-string guitar.). Curiously, precisely as I finished the words above, I heard the Byrds play \u201c5D (Fifth Dimension),\u201d which has always been a personal favorite, despite the fact that it\u2019s often explained as essentially a description of a trip on LSD.\u00a0 Even though I don\u2019t do acid and have never done acid and don\u2019t believe that people <em>ought<\/em> to do acid, I don\u2019t automatically discount absolutely everything that some have perceived during such experiences.\u00a0 (See Aldous Huxley on this issue, in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Doors-Perception-Heaven-Hell\/dp\/0061729078\/ref=asc_df_0061729078\/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=353874173411&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=16199523119620824965&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=1026980&amp;hvtargid=pla-454289116260&amp;psc=1&amp;tag=&amp;ref=&amp;adgrpid=71634025176&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvadid=353874173411&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=16199523119620824965&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=1026980&amp;hvtargid=pla-454289116260\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Doors of Perception<\/em><\/a>.)\u00a0 But Jim McGuinn (now Roger McGuinn), who wrote the song, strenuously <em>denied<\/em> that it was about LSD, and was apparently rather upset by the allegation.\u00a0 He said that it was based on his reading about Einstein and relativity.\u00a0 Anyway, here are the lyrics.\u00a0 I\u2019ve emphasized the words that stood out to me just now:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Oh, how is it that I could come out to here<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">And be still floating<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">And never hit bottom and keep falling through<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Just relaxed and paying attention?<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">All my two-dimensional boundaries were gone;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">I had lost to them badly.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">I saw that world crumble and thought I was dead<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">But I found my senses still working.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">And as I continued to drop through the hole<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>I found all surrounding<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>To show me that joy innocently is.<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Just be quiet and feel it around you.<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>And I opened my heart to the whole universe<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>And I found it was loving.<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>And I saw the great blunder my teachers had made:<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Scientific delirium, madness.<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">I will keep falling as long as I live.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Ah, without ending.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">And I will remember the place that is now<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">That has ended before the beginning.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Oh, how is it that I could come out to here<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">And be still floating,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">And never hit bottom and keep falling through<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Just relaxed and paying attention?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I close with a relevant quotation from <em>Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space<\/em> , written by the late astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan (1934-1996):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, \u201cThis is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant?\u201d Instead they say, \u201cNo, no, no!
