charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34616\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34616\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/06\/Sterling_Law_Building_Yale.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-34616\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/06\/Sterling_Law_Building_Yale.jpg\" alt=\"Yale's law school\" width=\"597\" height=\"448\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sterling Law Building at Yale University\u00a0 \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s session of the 2022 FAIR Conference was extremely good.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/religion.byu.edu\/directory\/kerry-muhlestein\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Kerry Muhlestein<\/a> presented some very helpful and informed keys to making sense of the biblical book of Isaiah.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bruce-young-91a20b10\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bruce Young<\/a>, who returned just two weeks ago from a mission with his wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Blair_Young\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Margaret Blair Young<\/a>, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, presented a nicely illustrated report on their mission.\u00a0 Included among his illustrations were video excerpts from an interview with a very impressive young Congolese man who told of his encounter with the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> and of his acceptance of the restored gospel.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/author\/nealr\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Neal Rappleye<\/a> gave a very informative survey of the current state of the question with regard to evidence for the Book of Mormon names <em>Ishmael<\/em> and <em>Nahom<\/em> from ancient Arabia.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnehiltonwilson.com\/home\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lynne Wilson<\/a> surveyed scriptural evidence, as well as evidence from nineteenth-century Latter-day Saint history, about \u201cRestoring a Kingdom of Priests and Priestesses.\u201d\u00a0 She focused special attention on the priestly role of women.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m sorry to say that, having stepped out to speak briefly with a friend about a topic that he wanted to discuss and then being approached by others, I wholly missed Dan Galorath\u2019s autobiographical discussion of his own path to Christ.\u00a0 I would very much have liked to hear it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/author\/craig\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Craig Foster<\/a> identified a multitude of errors and distortions in\u00a0<em>Under the Banner of Heaven\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 presumably as the result of my own alleged angry personal obsession with the recent FX\/Hulu television miniseries.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/liberalarts.tamu.edu\/philosophy\/profile\/tarik-lacour\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Tarik LaCour\u2019s<\/a> presentation, entitled \u201cTaking the Best Arguments for Atheism Seriously,\u201d offered an admirably lucid account of the logical and evidential problems of evil and of the problem of \u201cdivine hiddenness,\u201d and suggested some responses that might be available to Latter-day Saints, in particular.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was obliged to miss the evening\u2019s bonus session with Steve Mayfield.\u00a0 I <em>regret<\/em> missing it, because I\u2019m still very interested in the Mark Hoffman case.\u00a0 But I had a pre-existing dinner appointment at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bombayhouse.com\/provo-location\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bombay House<\/a> with members of three generations of a remarkable extended family.\u00a0 I\u2019ve actually known <em>four<\/em> generations of them.\u00a0 I encountered members of the <em>first<\/em> generation when I was a student in Israel back in 1978 and they were members of the Jerusalem Branch of the Church.\u00a0 (They\u2019ve now both passed on.)\u00a0 When I moved to Cairo, I encountered the <em>second<\/em> generation:\u00a0 The daughter of the couple in Jerusalem was living in Egypt; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arnold_H._Green\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">their son-in-law<\/a> was president of the Cairo Egypt Branch and a professor at the American University.\u00a0 (That daughter and son-in-law became two of our best friends; he eventually joined the faculty at Brigham Young University, where he was eventually appointed to chair the Department of History and from which he served as director of BYU\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies.\u00a0 After his retirement from BYU, I later basically betrayed them by suggesting them to Church leaders as service representatives in Saudi Arabia.)\u00a0 In March of this year, my wife and I attended the ceremony in which a member of the <em>third<\/em> generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2022\/03\/it-also-made-me-feel-really-old.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">received his commission as a brigadier general<\/a>.\u00a0 A member of the <em>fourth<\/em> generation \u2014 I didn\u2019t, at first, realize the family connection \u2014 served excellently as my teaching assistant for several classes and has since gone on, if it\u2019s conceivable, to even greater honors than <em>that<\/em> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/famousmormons.net\/whats-new\/koloa-haafuluhao-wolfgramm-becomes-first-pacific-islander-to-graduate-yale-law-school\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cKoloa Ha\u2019afuluhao Wolfgramm Becomes First Pacific Islander to Graduate Yale Law School\u201d.<\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe that I\u2019ve met any of the <em>fifth<\/em> generation.\u00a0 Yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Today\u2019s session of the 2022 FAIR Conference was extremely good. \u00a0 Kerry Muhlestein presented some very helpful and informed keys to making sense of the biblical book of Isaiah.
