Peterson<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Abstract:<\/strong>\u00a0Miracles occur relatively often in scripture, as do people who, for various reasons, want or even need to deny their occurrence. The arguments that are deployed to justify such denial haven\u2019t changed all that much over the centuries. In fact, they\u2019re still around today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84221\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/04\/92232442_10157992801729890_4629968560335093760_n-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-84221\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/04\/92232442_10157992801729890_4629968560335093760_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"Mausoeum of Qaitbay\" width=\"596\" height=\"447\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unfortunately, the most that we\u2019ve ever done on previous tours \u2014 and we couldn\u2019t do it at ALL on this most recent trip \u2014 has been to drive BY the famous medieval \u201cCity of the Dead\u201d on the eastern outskirts of Cairo, with its remarkable carved stone domes.\u00a0 (Photograph taken from Jamal Qureshi\u2019s Facebook page)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I want to remind you of the presentation by Royal Skousen on the campus of Utah Valley University that will take place tomorrow night (Saturday, 12 November 2022) between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM.\u00a0 His title is \u201cTextual Criticism and the Book of Mormon\u201d \u2014 and if there is anybody on Planet Earth who is qualified to address that subject, Royal Skousen is definitely that person.\u00a0 I plan to be there, and I hope that you will be, as well.\u00a0 (For specific details, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2022\/10\/textual-criticism-and-the-book-of-mormon.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">this previous blog entry of mine<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46889\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/03\/Mosque_of_Al-Hakim_8591305258.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-46889\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/03\/Mosque_of_Al-Hakim_8591305258.jpg\" alt=\"It looks better than when I saw it.\" width=\"597\" height=\"448\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I was actually supposed to lead a walking tour through the Fatimid city of Cairo during the very last hours before we left Egypt.\u00a0 We would have strolled along Shariah al-Mu\u2018izz li-Din Allah, beginning at the Mosque of al-Hakim.\u00a0 But our flight from Luxor was delayed, and they were very, very, very, very slow delivering its luggage.\u00a0 So that planned walk had to be scrubbed.\u00a0 The Mosque of al-Hakim was built by a Fatimid sultan who reigned under the title of al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (\u201cThe Ruler by the Command of God\u201d).\u00a0 It was completed in AD 1013, and it is one of the few major Fatimid structures remaining in Cairo.<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And here are a few other items that appeared over the past few days in <em>Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship<\/em>.\u00a0 I was unable to call attention to them in a timely manner because the WiFi on our Nile cruise boat \u2014 which is never very good at the best of times \u2014 was completely down and nonfunctional this past week.\u00a0 So, a bit late, I give you four links:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/conference-talks-axes-mundi-a-comparative-analysis-of-nephite-and-mesoamerican-temple-and-ritual-complexes\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Conference Talks:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cA<a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/conference-talks-axes-mundi-a-comparative-analysis-of-nephite-and-mesoamerican-temple-and-ritual-complexes\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">xes Mundi: A Comparative Analysis of Nephite and Mesoamerican Temple and Ritual Complexes,\u201d<\/a> presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/author\/mark\/?journal\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Alan Wright<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This study seeks to compare and contrast the temple and ritual complexes alluded to in the Book of Mormon with those known from the archaeological record in Mesoamerica. Although superficially they may appear incompatible, an analysis of their underlying mythologies reveals many conceptual similarities, suggesting Nephite worship and ritual might not have been wholly out of place in that context. There are significant differences as well, but these likewise serve to provide insight into the interrelationship between the Nephites and the dominant Mesoamerican culture within which they may have been entrenched.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/nibley-lectures-time-vindicates-the-prophets-a-substitute-for-revelation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nibley Lectures:<em>\u00a0Time Vindicates the Prophets<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 A Substitute for Revelation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between 7 March 1954 and 17 October 1954, Hugh Nibley delivered a series of thirty weekly lectures on KSL Radio that were also published as pamphlets. The series, called \u201cTime Vindicates the Prophets,\u201d was given in answer to those who were challenging the right of members of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> to call themselves Christians.<\/p>\n<p>This lecture addresses various peoples\u2019 ideas that one can find certitude without revelation and discusses the idea that where there is no revelation, there is no certitude.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/cfm-roundtable-old-testament-2022-lesson-47\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Audio Roundtable: <em>Come, Follow Me<\/em> Old Testament Lesson 47: <em>\u201cSeek the Lord, and Ye Shall Live\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Amos; Obadiah<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Interpreter Radio Roundtable for <em>Come, Follow Me<\/em>\u00a0Old Testament Lesson 47,\u00a0<em>\u201cSeek the Lord, and Ye Shall Live\u201d<\/em> on Amos and Obadiah, featured Terry Hutchinson, John Gee and Kevin Christensen.\u00a0 Did you miss it?\u00a0 Have you felt a strange emptiness in your life?\u00a0 A void that you\u2019ve been unable to fill?\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re here to help.\u00a0 And, so, we\u2019ve extracted this roundtable from the 9 October 2022 broadcast of the Interpreter Radio Show.
