Given their status as targets of humor and caricature, the well-worn stories of Adam, Eve, and Noah are difficult for many people to take seriously. However, we do an injustice both to these marvelous records and to ourselves when we fail to pursue an appreciation of scripture beyond the initial level of cartoon cut-outs inculcated upon the minds of young children. In this chapter, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw shares five personal lessons learned from the Book of Moses and Genesis 1-11.<\/p>\n

Oh.\u00a0 Now this one really hurts:\u00a0 \u201cDavid Crosby, an original member of the Byrds and a founder of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, has died. He was 81.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 When I was just a lad, I saw the Byrds in concert at the Long Beach Sports Arena (or whatever it was called).\u00a0 My brother had to drive me and my friend.\u00a0 They followed \u201cPaul Revere and the Raiders,\u201d who had one or two hits at the time, and they were followed by the Rolling Stones, who had just released \u201cSatisfaction\u201d shortly before.\u00a0 (So this must have been 1965.)\u00a0 I was there at least as much for the Byrds as for the Stones.\u00a0 I was a major fan.\u00a0 I may still have the paper that I wrote about \u201cfolk rock\u201d and the Byrds back in seventh or eighth grade, complete with illustrations clipped out of magazines and newspapers and painstakingly affixed with rubber cement.\u00a0 I followed the members of the Byrds after they broke up.\u00a0 They would sometimes perform at the Ice House in Pasadena, where I was a regular.\u00a0 Specifically, I recall hearing Chris Clark several times, as well as David Crosby himself.\u00a0 Once, I met Crosby as he was leaving the club after a performance and we had a brief while he was sitting on his motorcycle.\u00a0 Then he joined up with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.\u00a0 Wonderful.\u00a0 These people were heroes of mine.\u00a0 Icons.\u00a0 And, in my memory, they\u2019re still eternally young.\u00a0 Until they\u2019re not.\u00a0 David Crosby.\u00a0 Dead at eighty-one.<\/p>\n

Farid al-Din Attar<\/a>, who died in the early thirteenth century, is one of the greatest of all Muslim mystics. \u00a0His most famous work is a lengthy allegorical poem entitled Mantiq al-Tayr<\/em>, which is typically rendered in English as The Conference of the Birds<\/em> or The Parliament of the Birds<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s full of little sermonettes and stories and exhortations, subordinate to the overall plot of the story that it relates. \u00a0Here is one of them, as\u00a0translated by\u00a0Afkham Darbandi\u00a0and Dick Davis:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Moslem fought an infidel one day<\/span><\/p>\n

And as they fought requested time to pray.<\/span><\/p>\n

He prayed and fought again \u2013 the infidel<\/span><\/p>\n

Then asked for time to say his prayers as well;<\/span><\/p>\n

He went aside to find a cleaner place<\/span><\/p>\n

And therefore his idol bowed his face.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Moslem, when he saw him kneel and bow,<\/span><\/p>\n

Said: \u201cVictory is mine if I strike now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But as he raised his sword for that last stroke,<\/span><\/p>\n

A warning voice from highest heaven spoke:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cO vicious wretch \u2013 from head to foot deceit \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

What promises are these, you faithless cheat?<\/span><\/p>\n

His blade was sheathed when you asked him for time;<\/span><\/p>\n

For you to strike him now would be a crime \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you not read in Our Koran the verse<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Fulfill your promises\u2019?\u00a0 And will you curse<\/span><\/p>\n

The word you gave?\u00a0 The infidel was true;<\/span><\/p>\n

He kept his promises, and so should you.<\/span><\/p>\n

You offer evil in return for good \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

With others act as to yourself you would!<\/span><\/p>\n

The infidel kept faith with you, and where<\/span><\/p>\n

Is your fidelity, for all your prayer?<\/span><\/p>\n

You are a Moslem, but false piety<\/span><\/p>\n

Is less than this poor pagan\u2019s loyalty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Moslem heard this speech and went apart;<\/span><\/p>\n

Sweat poured from him, remorse accused his heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pagan saw him as if spell-bound stand,<\/span><\/p>\n

Tears in his eyes, his sword still in his hand,<\/span><\/p>\n

And asked: \u201cWhy do you weep?\u201d\u00a0 The man replied:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy shame is not a matter I can hide\u201d \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

He told him of the voice that he had heard<\/span><\/p>\n

Reproaching him when he would break his word,<\/span><\/p>\n

And ending said: \u201cMy tears anticipate<\/span><\/p>\n

The fury of your vengeance and your hate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But when the infidel had heard this tale,<\/span><\/p>\n

His eyes were filled with tears, his face turned pale \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGod censures you for your disloyalty<\/span><\/p>\n

And guards the life of His sworn enemy \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I continue to be faithless now?<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll burn my gods, to Allah I will bow,<\/span><\/p>\n

Expound His law!\u00a0 Too long my heart has lain<\/span><\/p>\n
