{"id":98376,"date":"2023-01-21T22:39:19","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T05:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=98376"},"modified":"2023-01-31T20:19:44","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T03:19:44","slug":"im-happy-to-say-that-dying-was-easy-and-pleasant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2023\/01\/im-happy-to-say-that-dying-was-easy-and-pleasant.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;I&#8217;m happy to say that dying was easy and pleasant&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18577\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/03\/celestial_idahofalls.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18577\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/03\/celestial_idahofalls.jpg\" alt=\"In the Idaho Falls Temple\" width=\"350\" height=\"458\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Celestial Room of the Idaho Falls Temple.<br>Note the reunions depicted in the mural on the wall.\u00a0 (Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While doing a little clean-up today \u2014 my wife is coming back tonight after two weeks in Virginia, and it\u2019s panic season (e.g., time to do the dishes, do the wash, restore some semblance of minimal household order) \u2014 I came across the following typescript.\u00a0 The author is identified on the paper and I was once acquainted with him\/her, although I haven\u2019t seen him\/her in several years and am not sure that s\/he hasn\u2019t died.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to share the name, though, because I don\u2019t feel authorized to do so.\u00a0 I just thought that some would find the account interesting:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>December 17, 2009, I lay in my hospital bed in a great deal of pain.\u00a0 Spinal fusion on all four of the cervical vertebrae had been performed that morning.\u00a0 During the transfer from the operating room to the recovery room, the side rails of the bed had been raised.\u00a0 In the process, my hand got crushed in the rail.\u00a0 The pain was so intense that it awakened me from the anesthetic and I cried out in pain, not because of the surgery, but because of the injury to my hand.\u00a0 The pain increased throughout the day to the point that I couldn\u2019t bear to have even a sheet resting on top of my hand.<\/p>\n<p>That night, unable to sleep or rest because of the pain, the nurses increased my morphine and other pain drugs and gave me a Benadryl pill because of the reaction I was getting to the morphine.\u00a0 These two drugs caused me to go into respiratory failure.\u00a0 After bearing my testimony and telling my daughter, NNNNN, to tell all my family that I loved them and my Heavenly Father and Savior, I merely closed my eyes and stopped breathing.\u00a0 For nearly ten minutes my heart, lungs, pulse and breathing stopped.<\/p>\n<p>During that time I had numerous experiences on the other side of the veil, but I will only tell you of one.\u00a0 There was blackness all around me but it was not a frightening blackness.\u00a0 I saw a group of people all dressed in white, standing off a ways from me and I walked toward them.\u00a0 I understood them to be my welcoming committee.\u00a0 They were family but I did not recognize any of them, so I assumed they were further back on my family tree than any of the pictures I had seen before.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, I must tell you that my experience with these good people was a very pleasant one, although we didn\u2019t speak the words out loud to each other, their thoughts were relayed to me and mine to them.<\/p>\n<p>They welcomed me and said that they had been sent to receive me and take me with them if that was what I wanted to do.\u00a0 They said, \u201cYou have earned your way to come with us now and be accepted into the Celestial Kingdom. . . .\u00a0 Or . . . You can go back to earth and do the work for us that you promised us you would do when you were in the Pre-existence.<\/p>\n<p>I could not in all good conscience go on with them and not keep the promise I had previously made to them,\u00a0 I decided to return to this world and keep my promise.<\/p>\n<p>I never want to face my ancestors again and have to tell them that I just couldn\u2019t make time for them out of my busy schedule, or that I was too tired, or my situation made it too difficult to keep my promises.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m happy to say that dying was easy and pleasant, coming back was most difficult and painful.\u00a0 I know, first hand, that the Lord has turned the \u201chearts of the fathers to their children.\u201d\u00a0 It is now time to turn the \u201chearts of the children back to their fathers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28753\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/12\/idaho-falls-temple-lds-83003-gallery.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28753\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/12\/idaho-falls-temple-lds-83003-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Idaho's first temple, not far from Rexburg\" width=\"378\" height=\"447\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Idaho Falls Temple,, as seen from across the Snake River<br>(LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a bit of sobering information:\u00a0 Did you think that Latter-day Saints are popular?\u00a0 That we\u2019re gaining social acceptance and respect?\u00a0 if not everywhere in the world, at least in the United States?\u00a0 If so, think again!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bycommonconsent.com\/2023\/01\/20\/guess-ill-go-eat-worms\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cGuess I\u2019ll Go Eat Worms\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Should we care about being popular?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 And seeking popularity would probably be entirely futile, unless we were to give up fundamental aspects of our belief and practice.\u00a0 On the other hand, if our image is so toxic that it makes hearing the message of the Restoration effectively impossible for a large segment of the American and even the global population, that\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17235\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17235\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/01\/idaho-falls-idaho-808x480-0001581s.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17235\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/01\/idaho-falls-idaho-808x480-0001581s.jpg\" alt=\"The first temple in Idaho\" width=\"596\" height=\"354\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another view of the Idaho Falls Temple (Wikimedia Commons public domain image)\n<p><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was just reading an article in the latest issue of <em>First Things<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Fisher\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Anthony Fisher<\/a>, the Catholic archbishop of Sydney, Australia.\u00a0 \u00a0In it, he mentions an experience that he had back in 1984, when he was a young student backpacking around Europe and contemplating a possible vocation to the priesthood.\u00a0 One day, he took a couple of fellow students around the famous Uffizi Gallery, in Florence.\u00a0 At the end of the day, one them ask who the young lady was that appeared so often with a baby in so many paintings.\u00a0 I myself had a similar experience several years earlier during <em>my<\/em> first visit to Europe.\u00a0 (It may even have been in the Uffizi.). One of my fellow students wanted to what the backstory was to a painting in which a young man was depicted, with a sling in his hand, confronting a giant.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s David and Goliath,\u201d I explained, thinking that would suffice.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know that story,\u201d he replied.\u00a0 I was astounded.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t imagine who somebody could have grown up so completely ignorant of even the most basic elements of one of the most famous biblical stories.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve thought about it since:\u00a0 We use the <em>David and Goliath<\/em> metaphor constantly, referring \u2014 for example \u2014 to seemingly unequal competitions in sports, business, and the like.\u00a0 Forget <em>religion<\/em>: What, if anything, does that metaphor even <em>mean<\/em> to someone who is completely clueless about the biblical story?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41463\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/idaho-falls-temple-lds-830542-gallery.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41463\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/idaho-falls-temple-lds-830542-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Idaho's first LDS temple\" width=\"596\" height=\"396\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Idaho Falls Temple, again\u00a0 \u00a0(LDS Media Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, here\u2019s an article from <em>Politico<\/em> about an idealistic woman for whom I wish all success:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/01\/20\/tami-pyfer-dignify-politics-00078409\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cOne Woman Is Holding Politicians Accountable for Nasty Speech. It\u2019s Changing Politics.: She was a Republican appointee, religious Mormon and grandmother of ten.
