What survives here is only the lower few courses of a wall that was roughly eight yards thick and, originally, much higher.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I failed to mention, in my summary post yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2023\/03\/three-days-in-jerusalem.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThree Days in Jerusalem\u201d<\/a>), that we climbed up from the Western Wall Plaza into the Jewish quarter of the Old City as the last act of our Thursday program.\u00a0 We had our meal there \u2014 no cheeseburgers!\u00a0 no burger and a shake! \u2014 and walked through the quarter over to Zion\u2019s Gate.\u00a0 En route, we had a look at the \u201cBroad Wall,\u201d a portion the city wall that was constructed by the good Judahite king Hezekiah \u2014 along with his famous tunnel and water system \u2014 in the late eighth century before Christ as part of his preparations for the Assyrian siege that he knew was inevitably coming.\u00a0 (Syria and the Northern Kingdom had already been destroyed.)\u00a0 Unfortunately, although the shape of the wall is still clearly and unmistakably visible, it is currently wrapped in plastic (as it has been, I think, the last couple of times we\u2019ve been here).\u00a0 I have no idea what they\u2019re doing to it, but I hope to see it uncovered when <a href=\"https:\/\/bountifultravel.com\/trips\/holy-land-15\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">we come again<\/a> the next time at the very end of October.<\/p>\n<p>This is almost certainly the wall that Lehi and Nephi would have known:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1 Nephi 4:4 \u2013Now when I had spoken these words, they were yet wroth, and did still continue to murmur; nevertheless they did follow me up until we came without the walls of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>1 Nephi 4:5 \u2014 And it was by night; and I caused that they should hide themselves without the walls. And after they had hid themselves, I, Nephi, crept into the city and went forth towards the house of Laban.<\/p>\n<p>1 Nephi 4:24 \u2014 And I also spake unto him that I should carry the engravings, which were upon the plates of brass, to my elder brethren, who were without the walls.<\/p>\n<p>1 Nephi 4:27 \u2014\u00a0And he spake unto me many times concerning the elders of the Jews, as I went forth unto my brethren, who were without the\u00a0walls.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s also the wall that so surprised Joseph Smith while he was encountering the Book of Mormon text for the first time while dictating its translation.\u00a0 Here is what the relevant Scripture Central \u201cKnoWhy\u201d has to say about the incident:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"288.8254147058824\">During the initial stage of translation of the Book of Mormon in the winter of 1827\u20131828, Joseph Smith\u2019s wife Emma would often write for him as he translated. Later in life, on multiple occasions, Emma would tell the story of the time Joseph was startled by the mention of walls surrounding Jerusalem at the time of Lehi.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"273.2682441176471\"><\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"273.2682441176471\">Edmund C. Briggs reported the most dramatic version of the story, as he heard it from Emma in 1856.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"265.95492\"><\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"265.95492\"><em>[O]ne time while he was translating he stopped suddenly, pale as a sheet, and said, \u201cEmma, did Jerusalem have walls around it?\u201d When I answered \u201cYes,\u201d he replied \u201cOh! I was afraid I had been deceived.\u201d He had such limited knowledge of history at that time that he did not even know that Jerusalem was surrounded by walls.<\/em><\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"265.95492\"><\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"265.95492\">In another account, she said, \u201cHe had not read the Bible enough to know that there were walls around Jerusalem,\u201d she remembered in 1877, \u201cand he came and asked me if there were walls around the city of Jerusalem.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"265.95492\"><\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"292.4748070588236\">David Whitmer, too, later recalled in 1885 \u201cthat at the time [of translation] Smith did not even know that Jerusalem was a walled city.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"76.24467529411764\">David likely heard the story from Emma since he was not close to the Smith family until 1829, during the final stages of the translation.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"76.24467529411764\">Hezekiah\u2019s \u201cbroad wall\u201d was discovered in the 1970s by the eminent Israeli archaeologist Nahman Avigad (1905-1992).\u00a0 It may be the wall to which reference is made in at least two places in the Old Testament:<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"76.24467529411764\">\n<blockquote>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"76.24467529411764\">Nehemiah 3:8 \u2014 Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"76.24467529411764\">\n<p><span id=\"en-KJV-18062\" class=\"text Isa-22-9\">Isaiah 22:9-10 \u2014 Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.\u00a0 <\/span><span id=\"en-KJV-18063\" class=\"text Isa-22-10\">And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Today\u2019s visitors to Jerusalem are often confused by the walls around the Old City, imagining them to be the biblical walls of the Old Testament period or, at least, from the time of Jesus.\u00a0 But they are neither.\u00a0 They were built by the Ottoman sultan Suleyman the Magnificent in the early 1500s.\u00a0 That makes them quite old by American standards.\u00a0 But it makes them quite recent by the standards of the Middle East and by Jerusalem itself.\u00a0 As my dear departed friend Bill Hamblin used to say, \u201cAnything after 1500 is journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes people base arguments about the location of Christ\u2019s burial on these Ottoman Turkish walls.\u00a0 They point out, quite correctly, that, while the Garden Tomb is outside the city walls, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is inside those walls, thus ruling it out as a candidate for the burial and resurrection of Jesus.\u00a0 (John 19:20 says that the place where Jesus was crucified was <em>near<\/em> the city, which presumably means that it wasn\u2019t <em>inside<\/em>.\u00a0 And Hebrews 13:12 records that Jesus \u201csuffered without the gate,\u201d meaning <em>outside<\/em> of it.)\u00a0 Anciently, though, both the area of the Garden Tomb <em>and<\/em> the site of the Holy Sepulcher were just outside the city walls.\u00a0 So <em>that<\/em> criterion doesn\u2019t disqualify <em>either<\/em> of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41030\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41030\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/Great_Salt_Lake_Sunset.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41030\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/Great_Salt_Lake_Sunset.jpg\" alt=\"A nice sunset over the Great Salt Lake\" width=\"597\" height=\"398\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunset at the Great Salt Lake\u00a0 (Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But enough of ancient walls around Jerusalem.\u00a0 Let\u2019s get down to something really horrible from the <em>Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u2122:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2023\/3\/15\/23641544\/church-of-jesus-christ-the-mormons-makes-water-shares-donation-for-the-great-salt-lake\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cChurch makes largest-ever donation of water shares to benefit Great Salt Lake: Historic move hailed by governor as donation is equivalent to 20,000 acre-feet of water\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/faith\/2023\/3\/17\/23644800\/inside-what-the-church-of-jesus-christ-is-doing-to-save-water-and-the-great-salt-lake\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cInside what the Church of Jesus Christ is doing to save water and the Great Salt Lake: Utah Gov.
