charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73129\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73129\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/04\/UNCEM_1437952125082.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-73129\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/04\/UNCEM_1437952125082.jpg\" alt=\"Lena Alaia's grave marker\" width=\"597\" height=\"448\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This spot, located near Miami, Florida, represents one of the many reasons that the truth of Christ\u2019s resurrection matters deeply to me.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last night, Mike Parker (aka <em>Peter Pan<\/em>) and Robert Boylan (aka <em>Roibe\u00e1rd \u00d3 Ba\u00edol\u00e1in<\/em>, the proprietor of the impressive <a href=\"http:\/\/scripturalmormonism.blogspot.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scriptural Mormonism blog<\/a>) recorded a genial ninety-minute conversation about the Heartland movement (regarding Book of Mormon geography), the origins and approach of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevillenevilleland.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mr. Pan\u2019s <em>Neville-Neville Land<\/em> blog<\/a>, and <em>l\u2019affaire<\/em> <em>Richard Nygren<\/em> (aka <em>le scandale du <\/em><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"fr\"><em>si\u00e8cle<\/em>).\u00a0 I commend the archived video to the attention of any folks out there who might be interested in those subjects or in the people involved in them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hl7ym2CjVl0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cEpisode 35: Discussing Neville-Neville Land with Mike Parker\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also note two new entries that have appeared on <em>Neville-Neville Land<\/em> blog since last I mentioned it:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevillenevilleland.com\/2023\/04\/an-open-reply-to-jonathan-neville-part-2.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAn open reply to Jonathan Neville, part 2,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevillenevilleland.com\/2023\/04\/story-of-neville-neville-land-robert-boylan.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe story of Neville-Neville Land, as told to Robert Boylan.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are some notes from a project on which I work for a few minutes every year or so, regarding the resurrection of Christ:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Helmut Koester writes that the appearances of Jesus \u201ccannot very well be questioned.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cWe can say with complete certainty,\u201d writes the agnostic New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman, \u201cthat some of his disciples at some later time insisted that he soon appeared to them. . . .\u00a0 Historians, of course, have no difficulty whatsoever speaking about the belief in Jesus\u2019 resurrection, since it is a matter of public record.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0 [\u201cAt some later time\u201d?\u00a0 Early.]\u00a0 Traugott Holtz declares that the disciples\u2019 \u201cexperience of resurrection . . . is in fact an undeniable historical event.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Critics who, by and large, accept the notion that the disciples genuinely had experiences of a living Jesus after his crucifixion and death can move in basically two directions.\u00a0 They might point out that events such as the resurrection simply don\u2019t occur, or that life after death is an incoherent concept.\u00a0 Or they might say that we simply don\u2019t, or can\u2019t, know what happened.<\/p>\n<p>What we know, says Fuller, \u201crequires that the historian postulate some other event\u201d besides the disciples\u2019 faith in order to explain the sequel.\u00a0 We must identify the cause of the Easter faith . . . outside of their belief.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of alternative, naturalistic explanations for the resurrection.\u00a0 Raymond E. Brown terms them \u201cgratuitous charges,\u201d which suggests the seriousness with which most serious scholars have taken them.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[5]<\/a>\u00a0 As James Dunn says, \u201calternative interpretations of the data fail to provide a more satisfactory explanation\u201d than does the claim of resurrection.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[6]<\/a>\u00a0 The Claremont philosopher Stephen Davis writes \u201cAll of the alternative hypotheses with which I am familiar are historically weak; some are so weak that they collapse of their own weight once spelled out. . . .\u00a0 The alternative theories that have been proposed are not only weaker but far weaker at explaining the available historical evidence.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 J. A. T. Robinson, <em>Can We Trust the New Testament?<\/em> (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1977), 124.<\/p>\n<p>[These notes are drawn from a very good 2004 essay by Gary Habermas titled \u201cThe Case for Christ\u2019s Resurrection.\u201d]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I continue, too, with my reading of Andrew Loke, <span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-extra-large\"><em>Investigating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ: A New Transdisciplinary Approach<\/em> (Routledge, 2020).\u00a0 Dr. Loke, a native of Singapore who is currently an Associate Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University, was a practicing physician before he returned to school first in the United States and then in the United Kingdom, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy and theology at King\u2019s College London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is an interesting chain of logic from his sixth chapter (\u201cWhat happened to Jesus\u2019 physical body?\u201d) that I find clarifying and, therefore, useful.\u00a0 Please note that the word or is taken in the exclusive sense of \u201ceither one or the other, but not both\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(7)\u00a0 Either (7.1), (7.2), or (7.3) is true:<\/p>\n<p>(7.1)\u00a0 Jesus was not crucified (escape hypothesis)<\/p>\n<p>(7.2)\u00a0 Jesus was crucified and he was not buried (unburied hypothesis).<\/p>\n<p>(7.3)\u00a0 Jesus was crucified and he was buried, in which case either (8.1) or (8.2) is true\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(8.1)\u00a0 The body of Jesus remained buried (remain buried hypothesis)<\/p>\n<p>(8.2)\u00a0 The body of Jesus did not remain buried, in which case either (9.1) or (9.2) is true:<\/p>\n<p>(9.1). The body was removed by non-agent(s), e.g. earthquakes (Allison 2005a, p. 204), animals, etc. (removal by non-agent hypothesis)<\/p>\n<p>(9.2)\u00a0 The body was removed by agent(s), in which case either (9.2.1) or (9.2.2) is true:<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.1)\u00a0 Others removed the body, either<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.1.1)\u00a0 Friends of Jesus (removal by friends hypothesis),<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.1.2)\u00a0 Enemies of Jesus (removal by enemies hypothesis), or<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.1.3)\u00a0 Neither friends nor enemies, e.g. tomb robbers (removal by neutral party hypothesis).<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.2)\u00a0 Jesus himself removed his body, in which case either (9.2.2.1) or (9.2.2.2) is true:<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.2.1)\u00a0 Jesus did not die on the cross: he swooned on the cross and exited the tomb later (swoon hypothesis), or<\/p>\n<p>(9.2.2.2). Jesus died on the cross, rose from the dead, and exited the tomb (resurrection).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apropos of (9.2.1.1) and in the spirit of it-isn\u2019t-actually-quite-Easter-yet, I share with you a link to which Bruce Webster called my attention a day or two ago.\u00a0 It\u2019s from the <em>Babylon Bee<\/em> (\u201cFake News You Can Trust\u201d):\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/babylonbee.com\/video\/if-jesus-resurrection-were-a-hoax?fbclid=IwAR0ymFj19NV2Uk09zTnMjZUkHLSTflHyHMUL62MLf9OPworXSY27_muw6Zw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cIf Jesus\u2019 Resurrection Were A Hoax\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Full disclosure:\u00a0 Dr. Loke argues, not only following the passage cited above but throughout his book, for (9.2.2.2):\u00a0 \u201cJesus died on the cross, rose from the dead, and exited the tomb (resurrection).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last night, we gathered with a substantial sample of the extended family for dinner at a Chinese restaurant.\u00a0 The princess, who was (of course) wearing the unicorn headband that had displaced her bunny ears headband earlier in the week, was impressed by all of the \u201crelatives,\u201d albeit that she was a little bit fuzzy as to who they all were and as to what, exactly, the word <em>relatives<\/em> means.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, though, we bade farewell to both the princess and her father very early this morning at the Salt Lake City International Airport.<\/p>\n<p>Farewells are hard;
