Orlando shooter was on U.S. radar; father says he was triggered by seeing two men kissing June 12, 2016

The father of the Orlando, Florida shooter says his son was set off after seeing two men kissing on the street several months ago.

“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action he is taking,” Mir Seddique said. “We are in shock like the whole country,”

After he apologized to the country for his son’s actions, he claimed his son’s actions “had nothing to do with religion.”

However, this claim seems to be negated by the fact that U.S. authorities had apparently had 29-year-old Omar Mateen on their radar for some time now. Even more alarming is that being on a watch list of some kind was not enough to stop Mateen from holding a Florida security officer license and a state firearms license, according to TMZ.

Early reports linked the attack to Islamic terrorism. While it may not have been a direct act of Islamic terrorism, there is little doubt his homophobia and motivation to kill 50 clubgoers had a strong basis in religious belief.
