Turkey military coup fails leaving at least 60 dead; Government says it’s in control July 15, 2016

An attempted military coup in Turkey has ended according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“The government is in control,” he said, while reports of explosions and gunfire still came in from Istanbul.

Speaking outside the airport at Istanbul, the president said, “They have pointed the people’s guns against the people. The president, whom 52 percent of the people brought to power, is in charge.”

Reports coming from the country say that at least 60 people are left dead and more than 350 have been arrested. Video from earlier in the evening showed military helicopters shooting at government buildings and taking over state held media agencies.

CNN ran video earlier in the evening showing an empty newsroom after military personnel entered and told all the staff to leave.

Another video making its rounds on Twitter shows soldiers involved in the coup surrendering.
