The words of Dustin Buck Lattimore (Protestant) will be in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">blue<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve called this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/02\/glorying-in-uncertainty-in-modern-protestantism.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe Protestant quest for uncertainty.\u201d<\/a> Protestants manage to be uncertain about (and to actually<em> glory<\/em> in being uncertain about) any number of supposedly \u201csecondary\u201d doctrines which the Bible (usually Paul) teaches quite clearly and definitively indeed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And Roman Catholics are quite certain on several doctrines the Bible says little or nothing about. Catholic over-certainty?<\/span> :-)<\/p>\n<p>You guys do the same. You\u2019re quite certain about the biblical canon (which you get right, minus seven books), and there is absolutely nothing about that in Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>There is not one iota of proof in the Bible for one of your pillars: <em>sola Scriptura<\/em>. The Bible never states that <em>only<\/em> Scripture is the<em> infallible<\/em> authority and rule of faith, and that the Church and tradition are <em>not<\/em>. It teaches that all three are authoritative.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the Bible never states that all doctrines must be <em>explicitly<\/em> in the Bible, or else they must be disbelieved. Therefore, that notion is a mere tradition of men; yet it is trotted out as if it had the authority of Holy Scripture.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This seems like an endless <em>tu quoque<\/em> battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The absence of the canon is unarguable. And the absence of the principle in the Bible that all doctrines must be explicitly in the Bible, or else they must be disbelieved, is also unarguable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Again, the <em>tu quoque<\/em> of \u201cyour theology is not in the Bible\u201d does nothing to deflect from the fact that neither is most of yours. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s simply untrue, and a gross exaggeration of alleged lack of biblical support for Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I grant that y\u2019all don\u2019t play by the same <em>Sola Scriptura<\/em> rules as us, but I would think it problematic that many Roman\u00a0Catholic distinctives are only tangentially tied to Scripture or not at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a lot less true than people think. I\u2019ve been able to find some amount of biblical substantiation for every Catholic doctrine. Some are indirect, deductive, or analogical or plausible-only, but I still come up with something. This is the material sufficiency of Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve made Bible-only arguments for (to offer just a few examples) the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2015\/11\/11-bible-passages-marys-assumption.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Assumption<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/01\/marys-immaculate-conception-a-biblical-argument.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Immaculate Conception<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/05\/biblical-arguments-for-marys-perpetual-virginity.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Mary\u2019s perpetual virginity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/06\/honoring-jesus-thru-mary-50-biblical-reasons.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">veneration of Mary<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/08\/biblical-evidence-for-marian-apparitions.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Marian apparitions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/12\/dialogue-w-protestant-apologist-re-bible-mary-mediatrix.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Mediatrix<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2015\/11\/50-bible-passages-on-purgatory-analogous-processes.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">purgatory<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2015\/10\/50-nt-proofs-for-petrine-primacy-the-papacy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the papacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic doctrines are also perfectly <em>harmonious<\/em> with what is in Scripture. You appear to grant that very thing by stating, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cIf it\u2019s not forbidden\/contradicted by the Bible, I\u2019ll give the benefit of the doubt to any doctrinal proposition grounded in Scripture\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The only card the Catholic has to play is to undermine the Protestant\u2019s faith in <em>Sola Scriptura<\/em>, because no appeal to history or attempt to ground Roman Catholic doctrines in Scripture will convince him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Usually not, precisely because Protestants (generalizing) are inculcated with the false notion of the necessity of <em>explicit<\/em> biblical proof of everything, and very often have a very poor understanding or comprehension of indirect, deductive, analogical or plausible-only biblical arguments.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To clarify, I\u2019m not a strict restorationist Church of Christ type when it comes to <em>Sola Scriptura<\/em> (\u201cif it\u2019s not EXPLICITLY in the Bible, we don\u2019t do it\u201d). I think of it more as \u201cIf it\u2019s not forbidden\/contradicted by the Bible, I\u2019ll give the benefit of the doubt to any doctrinal proposition grounded in Scripture\u201d (and I give lots of leeway here: some have a ton of proof texts, some just jive with the general principles of Scripture).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Which is why I appreciate your attempts to ground Roman Catholic particulars in Scripture (though I remain, obviously, unconvinced). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Glad to hear that and thanks for saying it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You may be Catholic now, but you still smack of evangelical Protestantism (which isn\u2019t a bad thing!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">All that to say, I probably just perfectly embodied what you are criticizing, though I would characterize it less as a \u201cquest for uncertainty\u201d and more as a quest to separate non-negotiables from the adiaphorous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I retain whatever is not contradictory to Catholicism (which is much), and various emphases (such as on the Bible). Argument from the Bible itself, however, is not strictly a \u201cProtestant thing\u201d at all. All Christian thinkers do that.
