This is the second death, the lake of fire;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[15] and if any one\u2019s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The lake of fire is hell.\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>(Hebrew,<em>\u00a0Sheol<\/em>)\u00a0is the netherworld where the dead await final judgment (see Luke 16 for a description). Those who are damned will go from Hades to hell.\u00a0And those not written in the Book of Life will go there. This is not speculation. This is biblical prophecy and a description of what occurs in the end times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDeath and Hades\u201d thrown into the Lake of Fire means in context that damned dead people were sent there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The account in Revelation 20 is one of actual happenings in the future. It\u2019s not a theoretical; it\u2019s factual. Thus, \u201cif any one\u2019s name was not found written in the book of life, he <em>was\u00a0<\/em>thrown into the lake of fire.\u201d The \u201cdead were judged\u201d (Rev 20:12), etc. The contrary scenario\u00a0would, I think , require modified \u201chypothetical\u201d language; something to the effect of, \u201cif any one\u2019s name <em>had not been<\/em> found written in the book of life, <em>he would have been<\/em> thrown into the lake of fire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That sort of\u00a0 language would easily and naturally allow an interpretation of possible universalism; a live, real possibility.\u00a0I don\u2019t believe that the language in the passage allows that possibility, because of its \u201creporting factuality.\u201d But there are other cross-references concerning the <em>book of life<\/em> in Revelation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Revelation 3:5<\/strong> He who conquers shall be clad thus in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life; I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[implies a very real possibility of not being included]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Revelation 13:8<\/strong> and all who dwell on earth will worship it, <em>every one whose name has not been written<\/em> before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Revelation 17:8<\/strong> The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is to ascend from the bottomless pit and go to perdition; and the dwellers on earth <em>whose names have not been written in the book of life<\/em> from the foundation of the world, will marvel to behold the beast, because it was and is not and is to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[two definite assertions that there are people whom God has known would be damned from all eternity, <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the book of life [but God didn\u2019t predestine the damnation; He simply knows about it, in His omniscience]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Revelation 21:27<\/strong> But nothing unclean shall enter it, nor any one who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb\u2019s book of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[clear, plain insinuation that the damned (not in the book of life) exist.]<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">We also have the following passage from St. Paul:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Philippians 4:3<\/strong> . . . they have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[implies that there are those who are not in the book; i.e., the damned or reprobate or lost souls, sentenced to hell]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Old Testament passages also teach the same notion:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Daniel 12:1-3<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cAt that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time; but at that time your people shall be delivered, every one whose name shall be found written in the book.\u00a0[2] And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. \u00a0[3] And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[the saved must be in the book, thus implying that others are not in the book. In the same context, it says flat-out that some of the dead will end up in \u201cshame and everlasting contempt.\u201d]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #3f4549; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Exodus 32:32<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cBut now, if thou wilt forgive their sin \u2014 and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.\u201d (cf.
