His summary article is called,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debunking-christianity.com\/2018\/02\/bad-bible-theology-pauls-letter-to.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBad Bible Theology: Paul\u2019s Letter to the Romans: Let me count the ways\u2026that Paul got it wrong\u201d<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(2-26-18). He devotes a paper to each chapter. Unless he repeats himself (a bad habit of his) or descends to sheer biblical skepticism (which I have less than <em>no<\/em> interest in), I will reply to all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debunking-christianity.com\/2016\/10\/pauls-letter-to-romans-toxic-brew-of.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">introduction<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is basically a catalogue of rank insults, where he calls St. Paul<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201ca crank\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cdelusional cult fanatic\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cthe prototype for Christian crazies\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and<\/span> \u201can obsessive-compulsive mediocre thinker and bad theologian\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and<\/span> \u201can embarrassment.\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">He adds:<\/span> \u201chow can anyone take this guy seriously?\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000;\">That about covers the \u201ccontent\u201d there.\u00a0Bears poop in the woods, brats throw fits, squirrels walk telephone lines, and the prevalent anti-theist brand of atheists insult Christians. Ho hum. What else is new?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thus far, I have counter-replied to 34 of Dr. Madison\u2019s critiques, without hearing one peep back from him as of yet (29 days\u2019 total time, starting on 8-1-19). This certainly doesn\u2019t suggest to me that he is very confident in his opinions. I know he\u2019s still alive and kicking, because I\u2019ve seen him write <em>other<\/em> posts during this same period (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.debunking-christianity.com\/2019\/08\/a-simple-misunderstanding-that-changed.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">example one<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debunking-christianity.com\/2019\/08\/christianity-gets-slam-dunked.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">two<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debunking-christianity.com\/2019\/08\/what-to-do-about-your-dead-again-jesus.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">three<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. Madison\u2019s words will be in<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">blue\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. Madison calls his critique of Romans chapter 10, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debunking-christianity.com\/2017\/08\/making-deals-with-god.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMaking Deals with God\u2026: So how\u2019s that working out for you?\u201d<\/a> (8-25-17).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And, clever fellow, Paul pulls a fast one to make a point. He quotes Moses . . . to back up his advocacy of faith in Christ. We find this in verse 8:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cBut what does it say? \u2018The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart\u2019 (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim)\u2026\u201d This is based on Deuteronomy 30:14: \u201c\u2026the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe.\u201d We might give first prize for quoting scripture out of context to the writer of Matthew\u2019s gospel, but Paul is no slouch either. (Can we cut them some slack because they believed the Old Testament was a coded text\u2014and they knew the code\u2014to be mined for information about Christ?\u00a0<i>NO<\/i>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The whole thrust of Deuteronomy 29-30 is Yahweh\u2019s deal (covenant) with Israel: he will be their god if they will be his people\u2014and the key to that deal is their observance of the law. Here are representative texts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">30:9-10: \u201c\u2026and the Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the Lord your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">30:11: \u201cIf you obey the commandments of the Lord your God[a] that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But all of this had become irrelevant to Paul: righteousness could never be achieved by following the law. Paul tells his readers that the \u201cword\u201d mentioned in Deuteronomy is \u201cthe word of faith that WE proclaim\u201d\u2014\u201cwe\u201d meaning himself\u2014i.e., Christ provided the magic formula for getting around the law as a measure of righteousness: Paul distorts the text in Deuteronomy. The author of Deuteronomy did not feel that following the law was impossible: \u201c Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away.\u201d It\u2019s no surprise that Paul neglects to quote this verse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is no contradiction here at all, as much as Dr. Madison desperately strains to try to create one. Paul has no trouble at all with good works. He encourages them as absolutely necessary, just as Jesus did, as I proved in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2019\/08\/david-madison-vs-paul-and-romans-3-chapter-3.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">installment #3<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">His primary point (often made in his epistles) is that faith and God\u2019s grace are the key things that <strong><em>bring about<\/em> <\/strong>both the ability to follow God\u2019s moral law and also ultimate salvation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We have to cooperate with those in order to do any good thing. These elements are present also in the larger passage in Deuteronomy from which Paul draws. It is no surprise that Dr. Madison ignores<em> these<\/em>\u00a0particular passages, which provide the key connection. <em>How<\/em> does a man follow the law, according to Moses? Does he do it on his <em>own<\/em> power, or by cooperating with <em>God\u2019s<\/em>?:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Deuteronomy 30:6, 10<\/strong> (RSV)\u00a0And the LORD your <span style=\"color: #008000;\">God will<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\">circumcise your heart<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\">heart of your offspring<\/span>, <strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">so that you will<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,<em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> that you may<\/span><\/strong><\/em> live<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">. . . [10]\u00a0if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, <span style=\"color: #008000;\">if you turn<\/span> to the LORD your God with<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> all your heart and with all your soul<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">God provides the necessary power to follow His laws, but man still has the freedom to either walk in that power or spurn it and rebel. Both these strains are present in Moses and the Torah and in Paul. Paul expands upon and develops these motifs in Romans 10:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Romans 10:3, 9-10<\/strong>\u00a0For, being ignorant of <span style=\"color: #008000;\">the righteousness that <em><strong>comes from God<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, and seeking to establish <strong><em>their own<\/em><\/strong>, they did not submit to <span style=\"color: #008000;\">God\u2019s righteousness<\/span>. . . . [9]\u00a0because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and <span style=\"color: #008000;\">believe in your heart<\/span> that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.\u00a0[10] For man <span style=\"color: #008000;\">believes with his heart and so is justified<\/span>, and he confesses with his lips <span style=\"color: #008000;\">and so is saved<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What Paul is saying, then, is that this righteousness can\u2019t be obtained merely by trying to follow the law on our own power. It requires God\u2019s grace and \u201cGod\u2019s righteousness\u201d (basically the same as grace: which word isn\u2019t used theologically in the Old Testament) or else it is impossible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s made possible by God granting this power, received in and by faith: \u201cGod will circumcise your heart.\u201d For more on this broad soteriological theme, see the section, \u201cEternal Salvation &amp; Damnation in the Old Testament\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2019\/08\/david-madison-vs-paul-and-romans-4-chapter-4.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">installment #4<\/a> of this series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lucky Paul: he\u2019s the guy that Yahweh chose to update the world on his salvation scheme (God changed his mind?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No; God didn\u2019t change His mind. He had the \u201cplan\u201d of salvation all \u201cworked out\u201d from \u201cDay One\u201d (being omniscient and outside of time). It merely developed, just like all other Big Ideas (secular or religious) do. The two testaments are perfectly consistent, as I think I have shown. The New is simply more developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In Deuteronomy the deal was pretty straightforward: God will treat Israel as his chosen people if they follow his laws and commandments. There is no focus here, by the way, on \u201cbeing saved\u201d\u2014earning eternal life. That concept did not creep into Judaism until well after the time of the Deuteronomist. What was the reward for keeping God\u2019s commandments? Well, Yahweh would refrain from reigning terror on them (graphically depicted), and would be nice instead, Deut. 30:19-20:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cChoose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Presented as the words of\u00a0Moses\u00a0delivered before the conquest of\u00a0Canaan, virtually all modern scholars reject its attribution to Moses and date the book much later, between the 7th and 5th centuries BC.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBos2013133_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Furthermore, scholars have identified multiple literary strata in Deuteronomy, written by different authors at different times. Chapters 12-26, containing the Deuteronomic Code, are the earliest, followed by the second prologue (Ch. 5-11), and then the first prologue (Ch. 1-4); the chapters following 26 are similarly layered.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEVan_Seters201579-82_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Most scholars believe that the Deuteronomic Code was composed during the late monarchic period, around the time of\u00a0King Josiah\u00a0(late 7th century BC), although some scholars have argued for a later date, either during the\u00a0Babylonian captivity\u00a0(597-539 BC) or during the\u00a0Persian period\u00a0(539-332 BC). (Wikipedia,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Deuteronomy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBook of Deuteronomy\u201d<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If we accept this schema for the sake of argument, then, also according to Wikipedia (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Job#Authorship,_language,_texts\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBook of Job\u201d<\/a>), \u201cscholars generally agree that it was written between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE, with the 6th century BCE as the most likely period for various reasons.\u201d If we accept this \u201cmost likely\u201d 6th century BC date, then it was contemporaneous with Deuteronomy, rather than <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cwell after\u201d<\/span> its time. And it clearly teaches both afterlife (possibly implied eternal life, too) and bodily resurrection:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Job 19:25-27<\/strong>\u00a0For I know that my Redeemer lives,\u00a0and at last he will stand upon the earth;\u00a0[26] and after my skin has been thus destroyed,\u00a0then from my flesh I shall see God,\u00a0[27] whom I shall see on my side,\u00a0and my eyes shall behold, and not another. (cf. 14:12-15)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moreover, if Psalms (notwithstanding the infinite, infallible wisdom of \u201cmodern scholars\u201d) can be traced to King David (1000 BC) and his son Solomon, then there is explicit mention of salvation (34:4-8; 49:7-8, 15; 51:1-17; 73:23-25) and eternal life (16:10-11; 21:4, 6; 23:6; 49:9; 73:26) long before \u201cmodern scholars\u201d date Deuteronomy. See all these passages\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2019\/08\/david-madison-vs-paul-and-romans-4-chapter-4.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">installment #4.<\/a> Ah, the sublime wonders of atheist biblical \u201cexegesis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And even today most of the people on the planet don\u2019t \u201cconfess with their lips and believe in their hearts\u201d that Jesus rose from the dead.
