As to MacArthur, I don\u2019t feel in a position to have clear opinions about anyone I know only from newspapers. You see, whenever they deal with anyone (or anything) I know myself, I find they\u2019re always a mass of lies & misunderstandings: so I conclude they\u2019re no better in the places where I don\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0know. But don\u2019t send me any newspaper cuttings. I never believe a word said in the papers. The real history of a period (as we always discover a few years later) has very little to do with all that, and private people like you and me are never allowed to know it while it is going on.
