Rather, I have consistently argued that the accusations made against him have failed to conclusively establish that he has espoused any heresy or radical departure from Catholic moral tradition. Conversely, there is much compelling counter-evidence, I think, that he has not done so.

It’s like being on a jury. If the jury decides not to render a “guilty” verdict, their view is “not guilty” as opposed to “innocent.” It’s not saying that “he definitely did not do this crime, and we are absolutely certain of that.” It’s saying that “we do not have enough evidence and proof, beyond a reasonable doubt, to decide that he is guilty. We think there is enough doubt to not be able in good conscience to render the verdict of guilty.”

The task of the apologist is to determine what are good and bad arguments for any given proposition. I’ve been doing apologetics for now 38 years. And I apply that methodology and attempted objectivity and rationality to Pope Francis, as well as the usual extreme reverence that Catholics ought to always extend to popes and the office of the papacy; also to Holy Mother Church, which is both infallible and indefectible.

***

Related Reading:

Replies to Critiques of Pope Francis (Dave Armstrong) [139 of my own articles]

Pope Francis Defended: Resources for Confused or Troubled Folks [373 articles]

Is Pope Francis a Heretic? (+ Part II) (Tim Staples, Catholic Answers blog, October 3-4, 2016)

Documentation: Pope Francis is Orthodox, Pro-Tradition and Against Modernism (Dan Marcum, Catholic Answers Forum, 1-9-15)

The Politically Incorrect Francis—14 Shocking Statements (Paul Kengor, Crisis Magazine, 3-22-19)

Pope Francis On . . . [31 different issues] (Mark Mallett, The Now Word, 4-24-18)

Folks Willing to Understand Pope Francis, Can; Unwilling Won’t [1-18-14]

The Ridiculous “Anti-Francis” Mentality: My Theory in Brief [12-7-15]

On Rebuking Popes & Catholic Obedience to Popes (+ Facebook discussion) [12-27-17]

Negative Reactionary Views of Popes Since 1958 [3-18-18]

Pope-Criticism: Vigorous Exchanges w Karl Keating [3-27-18]

*

Do I Think Popes Can Never be Criticized for Any Reason? Formerly a campus missionary, as a Protestant, Dave was received into the Catholic Church in February 1991, by the late, well-known catechist and theologian, Fr. John A. Hardon, S. J. Dave’s articles have appeared in many influential Catholic periodicals, including "This Rock" (now called "Catholic Answers Magazine"), "Envoy Magazine" (Patrick Madrid), "The Catholic Answer," "The Coming Home Journal," "Gilbert Magazine" (American Chesterton Society), and "The Latin Mass." He also writes a featured column for every issue of "The Michigan Catholic": published by the archdiocese of Detroit, and was editor for most of the apologetics tracts published by the St. Paul Street Evangelization apostolate. Dave’s apologetics and writing apostolate was the subject of a feature article in the May 2002 issue of "Envoy Magazine." He served as the staff moderator at the Internet discussion forum for The Coming Home Network, from 2007-2010. Unsolicited correspondence has indicated many hundreds of conversions (or returns) to the Catholic faith as a result, by God's grace, of these writings. Dave's conversion story was published in the bestselling book "Surprised by Truth" (edited by Patrick Madrid; San Diego: Basilica Press, 1994). Sophia Institute Press has published six of his books: "A Biblical Defense of Catholicism" (Foreword by Fr. John A. Hardon, S. His "Quotable Wesley" compilation was published by (Protestant / Wesleyan publisher) Beacon Hill Press in April 2014. Several of his 49 books are bestsellers in their field. Dave maintains a popular personal Facebook page, a Facebook author page, and has a Twitter account as well.
