That can\u2019t be helped. We can\u2019t \u201cplease\u201d everyone. Jesus said it was a narrow path and very difficult. So it\u2019s<em> narrow<\/em>! Why should it shock or surprise anyone tha<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">t various people will come up against Church moral teachings, and that it\u2019ll be difficult?<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\" style=\"color: #141823;\">\n<p>Romans 12:2 (RSV) states: \u201cDo not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phillips has a wonderful paraphrase: \u201cDon\u2019t let the world squeeze you into its own mould.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We can be like the Orthodox, who have caved into modernity (I would contend) by simply marrying folks a second and third time. They had already departed from apostolic and patristic teaching on divorce (in the East) by the 7th or 8th centuries.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, they are widely compromised on contraception now. What once was considered as <strong>grave\u00a0sin<\/strong> by them, as well as <em>all<\/em>\u00a0Christians of any stripe before 1930, all of a sudden becomes a perfectly permissible personal choice.<\/p>\n<p>That is <em>clearly<\/em>\u00a0caving into the <em>zeitgeist<\/em>, and not following apostolic tradition, when it is difficult to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The Church has always required that someone must be in full agreement with Church teaching in order to receive Holy Communion. I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2008\/10\/replies-to-a-lutheran-who-is-offended-by-being-excluded-from-holy-communion-at-a-catholic-mass.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">written about this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why this is considered <em>controversial<\/em> has always puzzled me. You gotta be tall (usually) to be in the NBA. You gotta be big and muscular to be in the NFL (and, as it were, also a male in both cases). Gotta know chess to be in a chess club. Gotta meet certain requirements to go to college or get a job or be in a musical group . . .<\/p>\n<p>Gotta be a Catholic (accept all Church teachings) to receive communion . . . .<\/p>\n<p>Ain\u2019t that a \u201cDUH!\u201d moment?
