These were the kind, loving, magnificently \u201csecular\u201d folks who heroically saved\u00a0the world from the horrors of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2015\/10\/who-killed-lavoisier-father-of-chemistry.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the father of chemistry, Antoine Lavoisier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * * * *<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"western decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_of_Reichenau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>Blessed Hermann of Reichenau<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/span> (1013\u20131054), a Benedictine monk, wrote several works on geometry and arithmetic, and also astronomical treatises (including instructions for the construction of an <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"western decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astrolabe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">astrolabe<\/a><\/span><\/span>, at the time a very novel device in Western Europe). <span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0Recent scholarship indicates that Hermann possibly had either\u00a0<\/span>amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>spinal muscular atrophy<span style=\"color: #252525;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">As a result, he had great difficulty moving and could\u00a0<\/span>hardly speak<span style=\"color: #252525;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0In this sense, he was sort of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Hawking\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Stephen Hawking<\/a> of his time (Hawking also suffers from ALS and cannot speak). Despite these disabilities he was a key figure in the transmission of Arabic mathematics, astronomy and scientific instruments from Arabic sources into central Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">He was among the earliest Christian scholars to estimate the circumference of the earth with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"western decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eratosthenes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eratosthenes<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u2019 method (this presupposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spherical_Earth\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">spherical earth<\/a>, which Eratosthenes accepted). <span style=\"color: #252525;\">He was\u00a0<\/span>literate<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0in several languages, including\u00a0<\/span>Arabic<span style=\"color: #252525;\">,\u00a0<\/span>Greek<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Latin.<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0He built musical and astronomical instruments and was also a famed religious poet. When he went\u00a0blind\u00a0in later life, he began writing hymns, the best known of which is\u00a0<i><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Salve Regina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salve_Regina\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Salve Regina<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(<i>Hail Holy Queen<\/i>).\u00a0<\/span>[source: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"western decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_of_Reichenau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia bio<\/a><\/span><\/span>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">He introduced into central Europe (from Arabic Spain) the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">astrolabe<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0the portable sundial and a quadrant with a cursor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother interesting piece of work by Hermann is on lunar months. Around 1040 he wrote\u00a0<i>Epistola de quantitate mensis lunaris<\/i>\u00a0which addressed the problem of the lengths of the lunar month.
