\n
Protestants often assert that all prayers are exactly the same under God: that whoever prays has the same impact as anyone else, regardless of the level of holiness and righteousness in the person. Just the other day in a dialogue with a Protestant, my opponent stated, \u201cGod does not answer prayers based on who is praying. God answers prayers based on whether they are asked according to His will (1 John 5:14-15).\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The second sentence is quite true but the first is not<\/em>, and, moreover, the first doesn\u2019t follow from the truth of the second. They are two distinct propositions.<\/p>\nThis is the usual sort of egalitarianism erroneously smuggled into biblical Christianity, for the Bible paints a far different picture. Protestants don\u2019t care for any notion of merit achieved (by God\u2019s grace, but with our \u201csynergistic\u201d cooperation) on the part of the believer: we\u2019re all equally fallen, equally (utterly) wicked sinners, etc. This is especially true in the case of Calvinism.<\/p>\n
All of this clashes with the Bible. God\u2019s inspired revelation repeatedly states that prayers of holy people are far more powerful and that God is more inclined to answer them. Once this is grasped, and once it is understood that saints who are in heaven are aware of us and can and do pray and intercede for us, then the Catholic rationale for asking saints (above all, the Blessed Virgin Mary) to intercede is made abundantly clear as an eminently biblical practice.<\/p>\n
Many Protestants, however, almost\u00a0despite<\/span>\u00a0their theology, do indeed recognize that this is the case: at least insofar as other people now living on the earth are concerned, since they will ask pastors to pray for them, thinking that this will help them more than asking the next person in the pew to do so. I always use the example of a Protestant asking Billy Graham to pray for them. This is so because Billy Graham is respected as a man of God and is considered to be a person who is\u00a0closer<\/span>\u00a0to God; therefore his prayers have more effect. That is exactly correct<\/em> . . . Thus, as so often, in practice<\/em>, Protestants confirm a truth that is emphasized in the Catholic faith.<\/p>\nAll passages RSV.<\/p>\n

[33] So he went in and shut the door upon the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. [34] Then he went up and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. [35] Then he got up again, and walked once to and fro in the house, and went up, and stretched himself upon him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. [36] Then he summoned Geha\u2019zi and said, \u201cCall this Shu\u2019nammite.\u201d So he called her. [18] And when the Syrians came down against him, Eli\u2019sha prayed to the LORD, and said, \u201cStrike this people, I pray thee, with blindness.\u201d So he struck them with blindness in accordance with the prayer of Eli\u2019sha.<\/p>\n2 Chronicles 30:18-20<\/span>\u00a0For a multitude of the people, many of them from E\u2019phraim, Manas\u2019seh, Is\u2019sachar, and Zeb\u2019ulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the passover otherwise than as prescribed. For Hezeki\u2019ah had prayed for them, saying, \u201cThe good LORD pardon every one [19] who sets his heart to seek God, the LORD the God of his fathers, even though not according to the sanctuary\u2019s rules of cleanness.\u201d [20] And the LORD heard Hezeki\u2019ah, and healed the people.<\/p>\nJob 42:8-9<\/span>\u00a0Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly; for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.\u201d [9] So Eli\u2019phaz the Te\u2019manite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Na\u2019amathite went and did what the LORD had told them; and the LORD accepted Job\u2019s prayer.<\/p>\nProverbs 15:8<\/span>\u00a0The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.<\/p>\nProverbs 15:29<\/span>\u00a0The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the\u00a0<\/b>righteous.<\/p>\nProverbs 28:9<\/span>\u00a0If one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.<\/p>\nIsaiah 1:15<\/span>\u00a0When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.<\/p>\nJeremiah 15:1<\/span>\u00a0Then the LORD said to me, \u201cThough Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people.
