Rise and\u00a0<b>be baptized, and wash away your sins<\/b>, calling on his name.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><b>Romans 6:3-4<\/b><\/span>\u00a0Or don\u2019t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore\u00a0<b>buried with him through baptism<\/b>\u00a0into death in order that, just as Christ was\u00a0<b>raised from the dead<\/b>\u00a0through the glory of the Father, we too may<b>\u00a0live a new life<\/b>. (cf. Romans 8:11, 1 Cor 15:20-23, Col 2:11-13)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><b>1\u00a0<\/b><b>Corinthians 6:11<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">\u00a0And such were some of you. But you were\u00a0<b>washed<\/b>, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><b>Mark 16:16<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #009900;\">\u00a0<\/span>He who\u00a0<b>believes and is baptized will be saved<\/b>; but he who does not believe will be condemned.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Paul seems to imply an organic connection between baptism (washed), sanctification and justification.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b><span style=\"color: blue;\">Titus 3:5<\/span><\/b>\u00a0he\u00a0<b>saved<\/b>\u00a0us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the\u00a0<b>washing of regeneration<\/b>\u00a0and renewal in the Holy Spirit,<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Compare this to\u00a0<\/span><b><span style=\"color: blue;\">John 3:5<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Jesus answered, \u201cI tell you the truth, unless a man is born of<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: black;\">water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (cf. 3:3: \u201cunless a man is born again \u2026\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The two passages are almost exactly parallel:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Titus<\/span>: \u201csaved\u201d \/\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">John<\/span>: \u201center the kingdom of God\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Titus<\/span>: \u201cwashing of rebirth\u201d \/\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">John<\/span>: \u201cborn of water\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Titus<\/span>: \u201crenewal by the Holy Spirit\u201d \/\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">John<\/span>: \u201cborn . . . of the Spirit\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The connection between the Eucharist and eternal life is equally clear, I think:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b><span style=\"color: blue;\">John 6:48-51<\/span><\/b>\u00a0I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that\u00a0<b>a man may eat of it and not die<\/b>. I am the living bread which came down from heaven;\u00a0<b>if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever<\/b>; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><b><span style=\"color: blue;\">John 6:53-58<\/span><\/b>\u00a0So Jesus said to them, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you,\u00a0<b>unless you eat the flesh<\/b>\u00a0of the Son of man\u00a0<b>and drink his blood, you have no life in you<\/b>; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood\u00a0<b>has eternal life<\/b>, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood\u00a0<b>abides in me<\/b>, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so\u00a0<b>he who eats me will live because of me<\/b>.
