I have noted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2017\/08\/john-calvin-torment-inept-execution-special-will-god.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">in another paper<\/a> how he seemed to be quite pleased in 1555 that the sufferings of (wrongly) condemned men were prolonged by the ineptitude of an executioner (\u201cit is not without the special will of God that, apart from any verdict of the judges, the criminals have endured protracted torment at the hands of the executioner\u201d), and noted condescendingly (in the same situation) how rack torture would be productive of useful information.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6rvff\" data-offset-key=\"9th4g-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9th4g-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9th4g-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6rvff\" data-offset-key=\"dbpgc-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"dbpgc-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dbpgc-0-0\">It is a particularly outrageous touch that he connects and ascribes this extra torment to the \u201cspecial will of God.\u201d He was at least consistent: this is the sort of horrific conclusion that the denial of human free will inexorably leads to.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6rvff\" data-offset-key=\"21g58-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"21g58-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"21g58-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6rvff\" data-offset-key=\"duh98-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"duh98-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"duh98-0-0\">In the famous case of the pantheist heretic Michael Servetus, we know that Calvin favored (and indeed actively sought) the man\u2019s execution for heresy (a common opinion of those times from Catholics and Protestants and Catholics alike). Calvin at least mercifully tried to have him beheaded rather than burned at the stake (which was his sentence). But what I find chilling (and sadly revealing) is his callous account of how Servetus reacted to the announcement of his impending execution:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6rvff\" data-offset-key=\"b7i0o-0-0\">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"b7i0o-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b7i0o-0-0\">At first he was stunned and then sighed so as to be heard throughout the whole room; then he moaned like a madman and had no more composure than a demoniac. At length his cries so increased that he continually beat his breast and bellowed in Spanish, \u201cMercy! Mercy!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>(in <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=yyhZhncGoT4C&amp;pg=PA223&amp;dq=calvin,+servetus+bellowed&amp;lr=&amp;as_drrb_is=q&amp;as_minm_is=0&amp;as_miny_is=&amp;as_maxm_is=0&amp;as_maxy_is=&amp;as_brr=3&amp;cd=4&amp;hl=en#v=onepage&amp;q=calvin%2C%20servetus%20bellowed&amp;f=false\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bruce Gordon, <em>Calvin<\/em><\/a>, New Haven: Yale University Press, 2009, p. 223; cited from Roland H.
