My name is St. Nicholas; and from the 4th century I do hail;<\/div>\n
I was Bishop of Myra, on the southwestern coast of Turkey.<\/div>\n
I spent time in the Holy Land, and also in Diocletian\u2019s jails;<\/div>\n
Fought the Arian heretics at Nicaea, but my history is murky.<\/div>\n

I was most known for helping the poor, under cover of night;<\/div>\n
Dropping gifts down a chimney, landing in stockings drying.<\/div>\n
I loved children and sailors: by grace aiding all whom I might;<\/div>\n
Once multiplied wheat, to save many in a famine from dying.<\/div>\n

My feast day is December 6th: the day I departed this earth;<\/div>\n
My relics still exude sweet myrrh-like rose water every year.<\/div>\n
Christians around the world celebrate the day with great mirth;<\/div>\n
Lots of stories of my life, young and old alike do annually hear.<\/div>\n

I was named\u00a0Nikolaos the Wonderworker\u00a0<\/i>due to many prayers<\/div>\n
Answered often through my intercession, with miracles as well.<\/b><\/div>\n
The Dutch called me\u00a0Sinterklaas<\/i>, adding on legends by layers;<\/div>\n
They say I leave coins in wooden shoes; maybe so: I won\u2019t tell!<\/div>\n

The tales and fables grew through the centuries, far and wide;<\/div>\n
Mostly in the countries where German and English are spoken.<\/div>\n
As\u00a0Christkindl<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0Kris Kringle<\/i>: to Jesus\u2019 holy name I was tied;<\/div>\n
Now I\u2019m often called\u00a0Santa Claus<\/i>: in long tradition unbroken.<\/div>\n

In America my legend, through Washington Irving and others,<\/div>\n
Spread in folklore, \u201cTwas the night before Christmas,\u201d and such.<\/div>\n

Of reindeer, North Pole, red suits, and elves were heard much.<\/div>\n

At length, the fables became so secular, commercial, and obscure<\/div>\n
That their initially Christian contents became shallow and hidden.<\/div>\n
It\u2019s not Santa who sees all and rewards children good and pure;<\/div>\n
But God the Father: the source of all graces and gifts we\u2019re given.<\/div>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0Jesus<\/i>\u00a0Who, dying for us, gave life such deep meaning and hope;<\/div>\n

This\u00a0true<\/i>\u00a0joy of Christmas, till the end of the world will never cease.<\/div>\n
