The Puritans and large sectors of the Protestant Reformed (Calvinist) tradition historically reasoned in this way. These are the same folks who would say that an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2018\/12\/john-calvin-worship-instruments-idols-superstition.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">organ in a church<\/a> or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2017\/01\/calvin-zwingli-bullinger-vs-statues-christ-crucifixes-crosses.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">bare cross or statue of Jesus Christ<\/a> is an idol \u2014 as John Calvin and some other early Protestant leaders argued. Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses picked up the same reasoning in the 19th century (the founder, Charles Taze Russell having been raised as a Presbyterian). Here are two Bible passages enlisted for this opinion:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Jeremiah 10:1-6<\/span>\u00a0(RSV)\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<b>2<\/b>] Thus says the LORD: \u201cLearn not the way of the nations,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">because the nations are dismayed at them,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<b>3<\/b>] for the customs of the peoples are false.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">A tree from the forest is cut down,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<b>4<\/b>] Men deck it with silver and gold;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">they fasten it with hammer and nails<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">so that it cannot move.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<b>5<\/b>] Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and they cannot speak;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">they have to be carried,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">for they cannot walk.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Be not afraid of them,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">for they cannot do evil,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">neither is it in them to do good.\u201d<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<b>6<\/b>] There is none like thee, O LORD;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">thou art great, and thy name is great in might.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever met anyone who worships a Christmas tree and regards it as a god or a replacement for the true God. That is what is being discussed. It is thoroughly misguided thinking, and neglects the underlying idea that is being condemned. Idolatry comes from the heart. It is replacing God with some mere created thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here\u2019s another the passage that is used:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Deuteronomy 16:21-22<\/span>\u00a0You shall not plant any tree as an Ashe\u2019rah beside the altar of the LORD your God which you shall make. [22] And you shall not set up a pillar, which the LORD your God hates.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asherah\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ashe\u2019rah<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">was a Canaanite mother-goddess, associated with Baal and worshiped as an idol, through an image of some sort (see<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/cgi\/r\/rsv\/rsv-idx?type=simple&amp;format=Long&amp;q1=ashe%27rah&amp;restrict=All&amp;size=First+100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">many Old Testament references<\/a>).<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0The pillar is also almost certainly a reference to an idol. Formerly a campus missionary, as a Protestant, Dave was received into the Catholic Church in February 1991, by the late, well-known catechist and theologian, Fr. John A. Hardon, S. J. Dave\u2019s articles have appeared in many influential Catholic periodicals, including \"This Rock\" (now called \"Catholic Answers Magazine\"), \"Envoy Magazine\" (Patrick Madrid), \"The Catholic Answer,\" \"The Coming Home Journal,\" \"Gilbert Magazine\" (American Chesterton Society), and \"The Latin Mass.\" He also writes a featured column for every issue of \"The Michigan Catholic\": published by the archdiocese of Detroit, and was editor for most of the apologetics tracts published by the St. Paul Street Evangelization apostolate.
