This occurred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2020\/08\/objections-re-the-catholic-ban-on-contraception.html#comment-5040626440\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">in the combox<\/a> underneath my paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2020\/08\/objections-re-the-catholic-ban-on-contraception.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cObjections Re the Catholic Ban on Contraception.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It\u2019s a classic example of the biased mentality of \u201cthe Christian \/ conservative is a dummy who ignores the obvious\u201d: when in fact, it\u2019s the <em>critic<\/em>\u00a0who turns out to be quite philosophically naive and shortsighted, upon close examination, and winds up (as almost always) splitting before anything constructive is accomplished.\u00a0 His \/ her words will be in<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> blue<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Our argument doesn\u2019t fundamentally rely on biology, but rather, on the contralife will . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nature itself \u2013 God\u2019s creation \u2013 aborts millions of the unborn every year. This makes God Himself \u201ccontralife\u201d and turns Him into a \u201cdo as I say, not as I do\u201d God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>. . . If you want to claim that every act of nature is that of God: every hiccup, sneeze, stomach ache, migraine, etc. But that quickly runs into philosophical absurdities. And of course, no one wills a miscarriage, whereas they do will contraception and abortion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A very agile and impressive sidestep to avoid the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019m wrong, show me\u00a0<i>how<\/i>\u00a0I am. Make an actual\u00a0<i>argument<\/i>. It won\u2019t put you out.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I presented my argument. You chose to side step it. The subject is the unborn. When you defend your position by switching from the unborn to \u201chiccup, sneeze, stomach ache, migraine\u201d, you betray the unborn and you expose the weakness of your position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I made the argument. You claim that (as I put it) \u201cevery act of nature is that of God\u201d in saying that God wills every miscarriage. This is your premise (apparently unknown to yourself) that you have to prove or at least back up with further arguments, not merely assert.<\/p>\n<p>I elaborated upon what I think is the absurdity of the premise by utilizing what is known as a\u00a0<i>reductio ad absurdum<\/i>\u00a0in logic (look it up): by bringing up \u201cevery hiccup, sneeze, stomach ache, migraine, etc.\u201d In other words, I was saying, \u201cif you proceed on your false premise, then you run into the implausible, absurd scenario whereby every sneeze was deliberately willed by God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think that is manifestly false. Perhaps you don\u2019t. But if you don\u2019t, you would have to argue the point: not do what you have done: not even grasp my argument and its substance and form, and make out that I <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201csidestep[ped]\u201d<\/span>. What in fact happened is that I examined the falsity of your premise (which is what Socrates always did, and I follow his method in argument) and presented a\u00a0<i>reductio<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t work because you appear to be unfamiliar with both approaches. That\u2019s okay. People learn all the time I took logic and several other philosophy courses in college and have been engaged in back-and-forth argumentation for literally 39 years, as a Christian apologist. So I\u2019m well used to it, and how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>But I have to explain what actually happened because you have a complete miscomprehension of it and think I am trying to avoid discussion, out of either ill will or inability (neither of which applies). Formerly a campus missionary, as a Protestant, Dave was received into the Catholic Church in February 1991, by the late, well-known catechist and theologian, Fr. John A. Hardon, S. J. Dave\u2019s articles have appeared in many influential Catholic periodicals, including \"This Rock\" (now called \"Catholic Answers Magazine\"), \"Envoy Magazine\" (Patrick Madrid), \"The Catholic Answer,\" \"The Coming Home Journal,\" \"Gilbert Magazine\" (American Chesterton Society), and \"The Latin Mass.\" He also writes a featured column for every issue of \"The Michigan Catholic\": published by the archdiocese of Detroit, and was editor for most of the apologetics tracts published by the St. Paul Street Evangelization apostolate.
