It\u2019s <em>good<\/em> to do because this is one of the lies about me that I hear frequently from those predisposed to despise me, and I\u2019ve had <strong><em>enough<\/em><\/strong> of it. Facts are facts. And lies are lies. It\u2019s easy as pie for someone to throw out ludicrous accusations about someone, without anywhere near sufficient documentation about the alleged severe character fault. And as I have explained, this harms my apostolate and my name and reputation: all of which I will defend against scurrilous lies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p>My Odyssey <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">from Evangelicalism to Catholicism<\/span> [title] (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2015\/10\/my-odyssey-from-evangelicalism-to-catholicism-2.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">9 December 1990 \/ revised: July 1992 \/ expanded: 1993<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther: Beyond Mythology to Historical Fact [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2021\/02\/my-earliest-catholic-apologetics-writings-1990-1995.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">14 January 1991<\/a>; was once posted as an online paper, but eventually taken down, as I learned more and more about Luther and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">honed or revised several of my opinions<\/span>; . . .]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I apologize<\/span> upfront for any excess of language or undue judgment or rashness. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2020\/09\/reply-to-anti-catholic-chris-bayack-vs-steve-ray-pt-ii.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">8-22-00<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I have, therefore, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">modified my opinion<\/span> of the strength of this proof text for the eternal existence of Jesus. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2018\/01\/dialogue-w-jehovahs-witness-christology-trinitarianism-iv.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">11-3-03<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Note: this was written in 1992. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I\u2019ve learned tons of things about Martin Luther since that time<\/span>; even in just the last few years, as I continue to do further research and reading. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In several cases, I have changed my opinion on particular elements of his beliefs and behavior<\/span>. Thus, I wouldn\u2019t express several things in this article the way I did then, and I\u2019ve discovered one definite inaccuracy; see the next note below. I have kept this article online, listed on my \u201cResume\u201d because it was my first published article. But I don\u2019t list it on my Luther web page, due to its outdated nature and relative lack of documentation. At the time I wrote it (before I was even online), I didn\u2019t have nearly the resources available to me that I now have. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2004\/05\/orthodox-vs-heterodox-luther.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5-27-04<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>One may indeed question the criteria by which \u201cdenomination\u201d was defined. This ultimately led to my own skeptical position, and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">caused me to change my opinion<\/span> only a short while after I wrote my paper, upon further reflection (and to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">remove the paper from my website<\/span>). Strangely enough, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">one person who helped convince me to change my mind was the anti-Catholic Eric Svendsen<\/span> (who despises my work and thinks little of me even on a personal level). But I don\u2019t care where truth comes from: truth is truth. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Eric made a good argument, that I found compelling<\/span>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/02\/33000-protestant-denominations-no.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">9-4-04<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>My first paper on Luther dates from 1991. Needless to say, I have learned a great deal about Luther since that time (anyone can see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2006\/11\/martin-luther-a-catholic-appraisal-index-page-for-dave-armstrong.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">how much I have written about him,<\/a>\u00a0including now two books [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2008\/04\/books-by-dave-armstrong-martin-luther-catholic-critical-analysis-and-praise.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a>\u00a0\/\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2014\/11\/books-by-dave-armstrong-catholic-luther.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a>]) and have <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">refined many of my opinions<\/span>, as I learned more and more. Swan knows this full well. He knows that <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I systematically purged virtually all references to O\u2019Hare\u2019s citations from my papers<\/span> way back in 2002 (because he noted it in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beggarsallreformation.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/father-ohares-facts-about-luther.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post from 10 October 2006<\/a>; the original version mentioned my name;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beggarsallreformation.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/father-ohares-facts-about-luther.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the present one<\/a>\u00a0doesn\u2019t, but still cites my words).<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0 Swan loves to keep citing my old papers, knowing that <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I have modified many opinions in them<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I continue to develop my beliefs about Luther on an ongoing basis, and remove old stuff<\/span>; he keeps bringing it back, without noting (apart from a very rare and reluctant \u201cnod\u201d like the above paper) that I have <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">changed my mind<\/span>. This is unethical: pure and simple. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2020\/05\/james-swan-ignores-protestant-errors-on-luthers-canon.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">8-27-11<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will change my opinion<\/span>, if I think the facts warrant it. People have to accept (or \u201ctake\u201d) me as I am. I call things as I see \u2019em. I have opinions and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">sometimes I change my mind<\/span> (I did recently, for example, [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2013\/08\/thoughts-on-now-discarded-term-radtrad.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">see link<\/a>] regarding my discontinuance of the term,<i>\u00a0radtrad<\/i>: which had some serious problems in usage and reception). (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2013\/08\/is-michael-voris-radical-catholic.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">8-12-13<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Waterboarding: How and Why<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I Changed My Mind<\/span> [title] (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2019\/01\/waterboarding-how-and-why-i-changed-my-mind.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1-31-15; rev. 1-17-19<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I expressed my opinion that\u00a0<em>Amoris Laetitia<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/11\/amoris-laetitia-has-already-been-clarified-many-times.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">sufficiently clarified already<\/a>\u00a0(11-16-16). Then <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I modified my view<\/span> somewhat (though not essentially), in terms of thinking that further clarification from the pope (in reply to the\u00a0<em>dubia<\/em>\u00a0from the four cardinals)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2016\/12\/pope-francis-cardinal-burke-et-al.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">would be helpful and indeed is necessary<\/a>\u00a0in our present \u201cconfused\u201d circumstances (12-1-16).<\/p>\n<p>Capital Punishment: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I\u2019ve Changed My Mind<\/span> [title] (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2017\/12\/capital-punishment-ive-changed-my-mind.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">12-4-17<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Review of Keating\u2019s \u201cFrancis Feud\u201d <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Removed, w Apology<\/span> [title] (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2018\/12\/review-of-keatings-francis-feud-removed-w-apology.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">12-24-18<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In fact, on reflection, I have decided that the overall argument I made there is too weak for me to continue to have the paper on my blog, so <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I have removed it<\/span>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2019\/02\/dialogue-does-the-bible-teach-limited-atonement.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2-23-19<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I modified my view<\/span> of Luther\u2019s view of the Immaculate Conception, which he changed later on in life. I call his position \u201cimmaculate purification,\u201d because he no longer placed it at her conception. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I changed my mind<\/span>\u00a0 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2015\/09\/luther-the-immaculate-purification-of-mary.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">on 10-2-10<\/a>] in part because of some arguments produced by anti-Catholics. Truth is truth, wherever it is found. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davearmstrong\/2020\/05\/calvin-mary-ever-virgin-w-tim-staples-vs-james-swan.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5-9-20<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I apologized for that and removed it from Amazon<\/span> (even though your book mentioned me 99 times and you didn\u2019t bother to let me know before publication), . . . I did that because I see this sort of thing all the time and it\u2019s ultra-frustrating.
