He said this during the course of rebuking the Pharisees for spiritual pride (Mt 23:2-10). Those who use this argument neglect to see that it would prohibit<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> all<\/span> uses of the word <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">father <\/span>whatsoever; even biological fathers. Since that is an absurd outcome, it is clear that the statement cannot be taken in an absolute sense.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, Jesus Himself uses the term <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">father<\/span> many times (Mt 15:4-6; 19:5, 19, 29; 21:31; Lk 16:24, 27, 30; Jn 8:56, etc.). Several other passages from others utilize the term, too (sometimes twice), so unless it is believed that they were being disobedient to Jesus, the objection to calling Catholic priests <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">father<\/span> must be discarded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #0000ff;\">Acts 7:2<\/span>\u00a0And Stephen said: \u201cBrethren and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">fathers<\/span>, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">father<\/span> Abraham, . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #0000ff;\">Romans 4:12<\/span>\u00a0. . . the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">father<\/span> of the circumcised . . . our<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> father<\/span> Abraham . . .<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #0000ff;\">Romans 4:16-17<\/span>\u00a0. . . Abraham, for he is the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">father<\/span> of us all, as it is written, \u201cI have made you the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">father<\/span> of many nations . . .\u201d (cf. 9:10; Phil. 2:22; Jas. 2:21)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1 Corinthians 4:15<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">fathers<\/span>.
